In the past, Rusty shows the newly-hired Brock around the clone laboratory and warns that the Hank/Dean clones aren't entirely street legal. Rusty discovers that one clone, D-19, is defective and aborts
In the present, Dean is taking a shower and takes some of his hair out of the drain. Sgt. Hatred tells him to get out and it's a desperate Hank's turn. Hank runs in and Rusty tells him he should be in his room because he's grounded, and he's not allowed to pee in the bathroom. As they argue, Dean puts the hair wad underneath his pillow for the Hair Fairy and goes to sleep.
In a long-abandoned attic storage room, D-19, now grown to maturity, lurks among pictures of Dean.
The next morning, Dean wakes up and discovers the hair has been replaced with a note from Rusty saying to meet him in the panic room. The bed chute drops open and Dean arrives to find his father waiting. Rusty explains that there's no such thing as the Hair Fairy, and it's time for him to take his career in science seriously. He shows Dean his new junior laboratory, the converted panic room. Hank arrives, making deliveries as part of his grounded duties, and takes some boxes out. Rusty tells Dean to get into his speed suit and get ready for his next surprise.
In the attic, D-19 strokes a stolen Mr. Reachy and overhears the entire conversation. He complains that Rusty never gave him anything. He imagines that Rusty is there, accusing him of stealing Dean's stuffed animals, and says he's not good enough to be Dean. D-19 tries to don the Dean skin suit that he's built that will let him be a real Dean. Imaginary Rusty isn't impressed. Hank comes in to drop off the boxes as D-19 hides. Once Hank is gone, D-19 vows that tonight will be the same.
Sgt. Hatred is demonstrating his plan to put explosive Rusty statues around the compound to deter intruders. At the local stripper bar, the delivery guy suddenly gets a psychic shining impression that something bad is happening at the Venture compound. He goes outside and calls the sheriff. They go to a hill overlooking the complex and the delivery guy warns that he delivered munitions and has a bad feeling about Sgt. Hatred and the weird-ass kids.
Hank panics at apparently killing Dean, and Dermott says he has to go underground in Mexico for a few years so he won't be arrested for vehicular manslaughter.
Dean continues to listen to rock music and hallucinate. Meanwhile, Sgt. Hatred makes a plaster mold of Rusty, who finally remembers Dean. He discovers that his son has passed out and realizes he's pushed Dean too hard. He drops him into a tub filled with ice water to revive him. Dean is ready to science. He takes a hair sample and begins experimenting. Meanwhile, Sgt. Hatred makes explosive plaster statues of Rusty to place around the grounds.
D-19 runs back to the attack, crying at his failure, and imaginary Rusty appears to berate him for his failure. He says the real Dean wouldn't give up and there's only one Dean left for D-19 to use to perfect his experiment. D-19 realizes what he means and balks, but the imaginary Rusty goads him into it.
Dean takes his science experiment to the kitchen. Dermott takes Hank to the lab and tries to burn his fingerprints off, but can only find papier-mâché.
Sgt. Hatred goes to get a late night snack and D-19 clubs him unconscious.
