Recap

The season premier starts up with the Monarch phasing out of a flashback consisting of the last scene from “Showdown at Cremation Creek, Part II”, where Dr. Girlfriend was about to say something very important him which went along the lines of “Monarch I’m…”; when all of a sudden he’s being shot at by several droid like machines with lasers guns. One particular droid shot at him and the laser beam penetrated his left wing. Dr Girlfriend appears and tells him to pay attention because that last shot almost hit her in the head. The Monarch tells her that he’s sorry and that he was distracted over what she had confessed to him the other day while they were inside the escape pod after their defunct wedding. The Monarch states that it was the last thing he expected her to say. ..

Episode Notes
This episode marks the time an episode was animated entirely in high definition & widescreened.
On most previous episode, letterboxing was used only for the opening scenes.

This episode has its own special opening sequence, and marks the fifth time this has happened. Instead of where the the Venture family is show, the Monarch, Dr Girlfriend and their crew are primarily featured.

Other than H.E.L.P.eR.'s beeps, Hank and Dean don't appear, Brock is seen only at a distance, Dr. Venture is seen only in flashbacks, and the latter two have no dialogue.

We learn the real names to several characters on this episode:
  1. The Monarch: Malcolm.
  2. The Phantom Limb: Hamilton.
  3. Black Moppet: Kevin.
  4. White Moppet: Tim-Tom

Before the episode had aired, during commercials and advertisements for the upcoming premier, it was deeply insinuate that last season's big cliffhanger was going to be revealed and explained during this episode. It was not revealed, but it was addressed several times.

During the credits, director Kimson Albert had a nickname added to his credit, which was a line from the episode: "Malevolent Murder Maze". It reads, Kimson "Malevolent Murder Maze" Albert.

The title "Shadowman 9: In the Cradle of Destiny" serves as a plot device in this episode, referencing the Monarch's past.

This episode marks the first time to feature animated clips of scenes from the episode in question. The show use to only show still pictures depicted from the episode.

Although this is technically and officially the first episode of the season, The Doctor is Sin (3x02) had a surprise April 1st (April fools) premier. But AdultSwim only showed a 10 minute roughcut of the episode with no sound effects whatsoever.

"The Action Man" can very briefly be seen inside a car during the Monarch's flashback scene where Dr. Venture has to go attend is his father's funeral.

The episode had credited a "Special Thanks" to Vishal Roney & Jennifer Stephens.

Episode Quotes
Number 24: Well, it's gone. Now what the hell do we do?
Number 21: We forge our own destiny. We are as ronin, wondering samurai without a master.

Kevin: Any questions?
Tim-Tom: Good. Team A, start cleaning this crap up!
Kevin: Team B, take this list to Home Depot. You ask for Carl.

Councilman 2: Tell us about the traitor Phantom Limb.
The Monarch: I know he wears an awful lot of purple for a white guy. What else do you want to know?

Councilman 1: This is not a torture, Mr. Monarch.
Councilman 2: It is an interrogation.
Councilman 3: Or a trial of sorts.
Councilman 1: I always say it’s a crucible.
Councilman 2: Oh, that’s way cooler.

(Talking about the Phantom Limb)
A Councilman: He was more then your controller. He was your lover!
Dr. Girlfriend: No duh.

The Monarch: I would of taking them down then, if Venture didn't hire a private army of ex-navy seal-cyborg-ninja-witches to protect him! Also, my memory's a little foggy, but I'm pretty sure he had a fucking tank.

Number 24: Man, I can't believe those little "midgitlers" expecting us to rebuild this whole freaking place!

(Numbers 21 and 24 looking at a semi recked car inside the wreckage of the Cocoon fortress.)
Number 24: What the hell is this?
Number 21: Looks like a spare Monarch Mobile
Number 24: Ah, I can't believe this! We could of been trolling around in that sweet ride for the last year instead of my crappy Stanza!
Number 21: Speaking of, check this out. (he points to Number 24's wrecked car)
Number 24: Ohh, my Stanza!

Dr. Girlfriend: This is nonsense! This isn't my fault!
Councilman 1: That is for us-...
Councilman 2: Silence!
Councilman 3: Ohh, you were so close!
Councilman 2: Right? I should have just gone with my instincts and not when I felt it.

Episode Goofs
Continuity error:

Many aspects of the Monarchs backs story is identified during this episode, one being his first encounters with Dr. Girlfriend and his employment with the Phantom Limb. But in "Tag Sale-You're It!" it was revealed that the Monarch was ignorant of Dr. Girlfriend's formal association with the Phantom Limb. Though contradictory, this could have been intensional. The Monarch could have been just asking it sarcastically. Or even try to play it off like he didn't know, seeing that he neglected to mention to Dr. Girlfriend he use to be one of the Phantom Limb's henchmen.

The direct quote was:
(The Monarch talking to Dr.Girlfriend as the Phantom Limb walks away.)
The Monarch: Wasn't that Phantom Limb? Didn't you work with him, or live near him, or something?"

Cultural References
Kevin: Team B, Take this list to Home Depot. You ask for Carl.

The Home Depot is a well known American retailer store that sales home improvement and construction products and services.

The Monarch: Oh man, if that shows up on YouTube...

YouTube is a video sharing site where users can upload, view and share short video clips.
The Monarch may also be referring to a numerous amounts of scandals that have been leaked through the well known video sharing site.

Ward's bag of "Fritas".

It is clear that the bag of chips Ward had, when he went to see Lady Au Pair, was a bag of "Fritas". Which assuming is an imitation of the well known brand of corn chips, "Fritos". Complete with it's cursive logo.

The "Bettie Rage" Theme.
Ward: Meet pin-up murderess Bettie Rage!

Which was one of the themes Watch and Ward advertised to Lady Au Pair.

It is clear that this is a parody of and a play on words of "Bettie Page"
Bettie Page is a former model who was well known for her fetish modeling and pin-up photos.
The Betty Rage theme even looked and dressed like her.

The Monarch: Really? Ah, so we aren't gonna to have to sit through hours of me abusing myself to Markie Post?

Markie Post is an American actress mostly known for her role in the hit 80's sitcom show, Night Court.

The Monarch: Well, Night Court was huge at the time.

Night Court was an American television sitcom that aired on NBC from 1984 till 1992. It was set in a courtroom in Manhattan NY. and had a cast of strange characters. One actress was mentioned in this show particularly, "Markie Post".

A huge penny two of the Monarch's henchmen were rolling out.

This is an illusion to the penny used by Two Face in the classic and well known DC comic book TV series, "Batman: The Animated Series" episode "specifically in the episode "Almost Got 'Im". And later he stores this giant penny inside his "Batcave."

Monarch henchmen throwing a container of Gatorade-like-drink to the two Moppets.

This is an illusion to a winning NFL team. Particularly in the Superbowl. Where when a team wins, it is accustomed to throwing a large container of Gatorade to the winning teams couch['s] in celebration.

A councilman: Einar was ready to sign but Björk's lawyers wouldn't budge.

It is currently unknown what song may have been actually playing on the radio during the car scene, but what this council man said it had to of been Björk's first band, The Sugarcubes. And the "Einar" this councilmen mentioned may have been referring to the band's other vocalist "Einar Örn Benediktsson".

Björk and Einar are both popular Icelandic singers, as mentioned previously. There band split up in 1992.

Monarch Henchman Number 24: What are the odds we'll get lucky enough they'll pull a double Villechaize themselves.

Hervé Villechaize was a famous dwarf actor whose most noticeable role was playing "Tattoo" on the hit television series Fantasy Island. He committed suicide via gunshot in 1993.

Monarch Henchman Number 24: Man, I cant believe those little "midgitlers" expecting us to rebuild this whole freaking place!

Midgitler, of course, is the combination and play on words of "midget" and "Hitler".
Number 24 uses this as a reference to what and how the Moppets are treating them and making them do. As like what Hitler did to Holocaust victims in concentration camps in WW2, they are brutally mistreating them while they are forced work on rebuilding the cocoon fortress.

A Councilman: Not just the traitor the Phantom Limb, but everyone he had ever henched for. Sea Anemone, Helicoptro, and even Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Nightmare Coat.

Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Nightmare Coat is actually an illusion to an actual musical titled "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat"

Monarch Henchman Number 24: Maybe Brock knows how to kill with words. Maybe. Maybe his name is a killing word.

This is a reference to David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of Dune.
In the film adaptation of Dune, a Fremen training with the weirding module says "Muad'dib" and destroys a ceiling accidentally, leading Paul to make the remark "my name is a killing word."

Episode References
The song featured during the car scene were the Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend were making love in was "Revv Me Up". This song was also used in an another Venture Bros. episode, Mid-life Chrysalis.

Revv Me Up was a song written and created by Doc Hammer and his friend Glenn Max in the early 90's. The song is sung by Terrence Fleming. Who also voices the recurring character "Col. Bud Manstrong"

The conversation shown during the episode between a few councilmen and the Monarch is an inside joke between Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick on how they cannot afford to license songs because their production budget.

During the construction montage and the Monarch's and Dr. Girlfriends union, the song played during these scenes is "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity" by Gustav Holst.

"Mars, the Bringer of War", another song made by Gustav Holst. was referenced in the episode "Hate Floats".

Back in the season 2 episode "Fallen Arches", on the part where the monarch is about to leave the hooker go, he anaerobes his robe to reveal a minotaur tattoo on his back. He then calls himself "I am the Mighty Minotaur". And furthermore he tells teh hooker that the cocoon has its own "Murderous Maze"

The Mighty Minotaur, in this episode, was first shown to be an excuse the Monarch made to not give out his real persona to the Phantom Limb, then it was revealed that there really is a super villain named the "Mighty Minotaur." He even invents his own threats complementing the theme, namely his "Malevolent Murderous Maze"

In the season 2 episode, Hate Floats, Numbers 21 and 24 ask the Monarch for new numbers after they rebuild the cocoon fortress. And so the Monarch agrees to this and gives the Numbers "1 and 2", but a thug character they hired to rebuild the cocoon takes the number away from him.

We see on this episode a new discussion between Henchmen Numbers 21 & 24, over numbers being actual ranks down a chain of command, with two Moppets being Dr. Girlfriends Number 1's and 2's.

Number 24: Ah, I can't believe this! We could of been trolling around in that sweet ride for the last year instead of my crappy Stanza!

Number 24 was referring to the times in season 2 where he was obligated by the Monarch to use his Nissan Stanza to take them around different places. In both "Victor. Echo. November." and "Showdown at Cremation Creek, Part II" Number 24's Nissan Stanza were heavily used.

As The Monarch mentioned in the season 2 episode Victor. Echo. November., the younger Queen Etheria (Dr. Girlfriend) had a hairstyle like Saffron from Republica.
