Sheriff Rick Grimes is critically wounded in the line of duty and falls into a coma. When he awakens, he is horrified to find that the world has been devastated by the dead having come back to life and the living are now clinging to the outskirts for survival. He sets forth to trek a virtually dead landscape in hopes of finding his wife and son.
Rick's discovery of new survivors is bittersweet as they are kept from returning to their camp by a horde of walkers. However, the most dangerous threat may not be from the dead, but from the living.
Rick arrives at the survivor camp where he is reunited with his family. Unfortunately, this leaves Shane, who's been filling Rick's role, on the outside. Things get worse when Daryl returns to camp and hears that his brother was left handcuffed on a roof.
Rick, Glenn, T-Dog, and Daryl move on after their grisly discovery to retrieve the guns when they encounter a group of scavengers who narrowly beat them to the catch. However, Glenn is kidnapped in the scuffle, which leads to a tense stand-off and a surprising discovery.
Meanwhile, back at camp, the group has to handle a serious situation when Jim begins acting unhinged.
Everyone deals with the fallout of the walker attack. Andrea has to come to grips with the fate of her sister, while Jim is found out to have been bitten. With the camp clearly no longer safe, a decision must made about the direction they are to take.
The survivors find a safe haven at the CDC. With all the creatures comfort that they could call home, it seems a perfect place to rest. However, the lone scientist, Dr. Jenner, knows something that he isn't telling them.
After the events at the CDD, Rick tries to find somewhere safe for the rest of the survivors. The group encounters even more troubles on the road than they could have imagined, and one of their own goes missing.
Rick comes across a safe place that could mean salvation for the group, but there are more urgent things on his mind. The future of one of the survivors hangs in the balance and Shane searches for medical supplies on a dangerous mission.
Trapped inside the school on his supply mission, Shane has to find a way out with both the medical supplies and his life. The search for Sophia continues as Daryl and Andrea scour the woods for a trace of the missing girl.
Faced with a life and death decision, Shane makes a bold choice that leaves him distanced and estranged from the rest of the group. On the farm, every tries to come to terms with what it means to live in a world with the living and the undead.
When Rick tries to convince Hershel to let the group stay inside the house, Hershel quickly shuts him down. Daryl goes searching for Sophia by himself and runs into some trouble.

It seems like everyone in the group has a secret. Dale offers Hershel help, but is turned down. One of their own proves to be a natural in the shooting range.
With everyone's secrets now out in the open, the group might face eviction from the safest place they have known so far. Shane takes matters into his own hands when he feels threatened.
After the barn, there is much conflict among both groups of survivors, Hershel wants Rick and his group to leave immediately and Shane accuses Rick to be just as delusional as Hershel saying that Hershel knew about Sophia the whole time and hid her from the group. Dale tells Andrea to be careful about her relationship with Shane since Dale knows what kind of person Shane is and now wants him gone from the group. He also reveals this to Lori, including the fate of Otis.
No one knows where Lori is after she went out on her own to find Rick. Meanwhile, Rick is trapped in a fight for his life with Hershel and Glenn. Sometimes the living can be more dangerous than the dead. People are starting to notice Shane's erratic behaviour.
Rick and Shane go on a road trip, but they each have a different outcome in mind. Back on the farm, Beth tries to take things into her own hands, but doesn't realize the effect that this could have on the rest of her family.
Rick sides with Shane causing Dale to worry that the group is losing its humanity. Carl's actions have unintended consequences.
Tensions are at an all time high as everything comes to a head at the farm. When someone goes missing, Rick, Shane, Daryl and Glenn search the woods. Shane lashes out at as a brash attempt to get what he think is rightfully his.
Rick and Carl find the farm in jeopardy; the group is split up in the chaos; Rick's leadership is questioned.
Rick is determined to find a safe place for his family, and pregnant wife, following the downfall of the farm. When they stumble upon somewhere too good to be true, they must fight their way in to claim it as their own.
A threat from inside the prison could be even deadlier than the walkers outside. Lori and Carol work to save the life of one of their own. Carol works on a secret project.
After witnessing an accident, Andrea and Michonne are introduced to a new community of survivors. As conflicts arise with their new acquaintances, a decision must be made.
A break in puts everyone's lives in danger. Andrea tells Merle how to find his brother. Carol and T-Dog fight for their lives in the dark corners of the prison halls.
Rick struggles to find meaning after a horrific loss. The Governor throws a party for Woodbury, but it is not exactly what Andrea and Michonne were expecting. Daryl and Maggie go on a supply run.
Rick continues to struggle with loss, causing him to not see or hear things clearly. Andrea settles in at Woodbury and does her best to contribute. Daryl talks to Carl about his past.
Glenn and Maggie suffer through an interrogation about the prison. The Governor shows more of his dark side. Andrea helps Milton with an experiment in the lab.

Rick goes off the grid, in search of answers to a personal question. Glenn takes a leadership role on the fate of those at the prison. The Governor plans his retaliation. Daryl and Merle fall into old habits and question their bond.

Andrea searches for answers at the prison when Woodbury begins to make her question her decisions. Rick and the group must prepare to run, or to stand their ground, as the prison is threatened.
Rick, Carl and Michonne head into town to search for supplies and weapons. Rick runs into a familiar face in his home town and learns that he is falling apart, too. Carl tests his boundaries with Michonne.

With the recent threat of the flu outbreak finally under control, Rick and the group feel that they might almost be out of the woods. The Governor convinces his new group of followers to make a move on the prison.
Rick and Carl try to move on after losing their home, their friends and their family. Michonne dwells on the past as she faces a future alone, separated from everyone after the downfall of the prison.
Daryl and Beth travel together through the woods in search of shelter and familiar faces. Tyreese tries to protect some of the most vulnerable survivors of the attack. Maggie, Bob, and Sasha disagree on what moves they should make next.
Glenn and Tara are unwilling travellers with a group of strange new survivors. Rick is caught off-guard when strangers descend upon his safe house. Michonne and Carl learn more about each other on a supply run.
Daryl helps Beth fulfil a bucket list wish, and in the process the pair learn much more about one another than they expected.
Maggie, Sasha and Bob continue to argue over the best decision for them as a group and as individuals. Daryl teaches Beth how to track and the pair unintentionally stumbles upon a safe haven.
