Amy and Andrea are in a fishing boat on the quarry. They attempt to
reminisce about fishing with their dad, but they are 12 years apart and
have completely different memories. They each assume that the other has
a faulty memory, but Amy finally realizes that they were both right -
their dad taught them differently. "He knew we were so different," Amy
says. "He knew you needed to catch the fish and I needed to throw them
back." They tear up before remembering the "no crying in the boat" rule
which was likely more for their dad's sake than any effect it might have
on the fish. Dale keeps a watchful eye on them from the roof of the RV.
Rick, T-Dog, Glenn and Daryl find Merle's severed hand on the Atlanta
rooftop. Rick notes that while the saw was likely too dull for the
handcuffs, it worked just fine on Merle's hand. Daryl aims his crossbow
at T-Dog. Daryl blames him for his brother's predicament. Rick points
his own gun at Daryl and issues a warning. The tension subsides
somewhat, and Daryl picks up his brother's hand, wrapping it in T-Dog's
bandana and putting it in Glenn's backpack for safe keeping. The group
follows his blood trail and discovers a few dead zombies along the way.
Apparently, Merle is just as good at killing zombies with one hand as he
was with two.
Back at camp, Dale walks out and asks Jim if he's okay. Jim continues to
dig holes without responding. Dale tries to get Jim to drink some water
in the interest of avoiding heatstroke. Jim looks at Dale, but still
doesn't answer as he continues digging.
Daryl takes out a Walker with his crossbow. He notes that Merle had
enough energy in him to take out two other Walkers one-handed with a
wrench. He goes on to say that his brother is a very tough person: if
they fed him a hammer, it would come out as nails. Rick says that any
many can pass out from blood loss no matter how tough he is.
Amy and Andrea come back to the camp with tons of fish for the camp.
Morales is grateful because his kids will eat well tonight. Andrea says
it was Dale's canoe and gear, therefore the thanks go to him. Carl asks
if they can teach him how to fish. Lori says it's fine with her. Dale
isn't his usual happy self. He tells everyone that they might have a
problem. He points over to Jim, who is still digging the holes.
Glenn suggests to the group that he go out alone. Rick and Daryl don't
think that is a good idea. Glenn asks them to hear him out. If he goes
alone, he will be quick and won't draw attention. He comes up with a
very comprehensive plan that doesn't appear to have any major drawbacks.
Daryl asks Glenn what he did before this happened. Glenn says that he
delivered pizzas.
As the team hits the streets, they find Walkers everywhere. Glenn finds
the bag of weapons left behind by Rick, but is immediately accosted by a
street gang. They shove Glenn into their car and speed away. One of
their members is left behind and confronted by Rick and a very angry Daryl.
Jim couldn't or wouldn't stop digging holes. In the interest of keeping
him safe, Shane ties Jim to a tree. Jim apologizes to the children for
scaring them. Something he dreamed last night got him started with the
digging, although he can't remember the details. He urges Lori to keep
Carl close. "Never let him out of your sight," he says. Lori understands.
The rescue team isn't getting anywhere with the gang member until Daryl
leads him to believe he's the one who cut off Merle's hand. That's
enough to get the words flowing. He aims them at the gang's hideout.
Their leader's name is Guillermo. Rick wants to give them back their
gang member in exchange for Glenn, but Guillermo refuses. He wants the
bag of guns. Once he has the weapons, they can have Glenn back.
Shane tries to get Jim to take a break, but he refuses. What can Shane
do to make him stop? Shane says he's only trying to help Jim. Jim asks
if he's going to do him like he did Ed. He notes that Ed is badly
bruised from Shane's beating and says that's what will happen to anyone
that crosses Shane's path. Amy says that Ed was beating Carol. Jim yells
that Ed and Carol's marriage is none of Shane's business. He asks who
voted Shane the king. Shane insists he's not in charge of anything and
asks Jim to give him the shovel. Jim shoves Shane, threatening to hit
him with the shovel. Shane takes Jim down as Jim yells he has no right.
Shane tries to get through to Jim. He asks him to calm down and promises
him nobody is going to hurt him. Jim tells them that he told that to his
wife and sons repeatedly since the outbreak. He says that the Walkers
came in and grabbed his wife and sons. The only reason he was able to
get away is because the Walkers were too busy eating his family.
The rescue team takes a meeting to decide what to do. Daryl doesn't want
to give up the guns, but Rick does. Glenn saved his life, and he intends
to return the favor. They bring the young thug, bound and gagged, to the
headquarters and shove him back to his gang at gunpoint. Rick refuses to
surrender the bag of weapons until he sees that Glenn is okay. Everybody
draws their weapons, but everybody stops what they are doing when an old
lady arrives. She's the grandmother of one of the gang members. Once she
knows that Rick is not there to arrest her kin, she leads Rick and his
team inside, where they find a nursing home. The gang is caring for the
patients, and are willing to do whatever they have to in order to obtain
weapons and medicine. The original staff took off when the Walkers
arrived, leaving the patients there to die. Rick hands over a few
weapons to help stockpile their meager holdings.
When they head back to their van, it's gone. Rick figures Merle took it.
Daryl can see how his brother would probably head back to the camp to
exact revenge. The men start hoofing it back to the camp.
Shane frees Jim so he can join the survivor camp for a fish fry. They're
having a great time, until the Walkers arrive. Amy screams hysterically
as one takes a bite of Amy's neck, and she bleeds to death. Shane opens
fire, and Morales and Jim do what they can to beat the Walkers. Just in
time, Rick and the team arrive and open fire with their newly acquired
weapons. Amy sobs and screams in mourning over her lost sister. Jim
whispers "I remember my dream now; why I dug the holes."
