The White House is adorned with holiday decorations, but the staff is feeling anything but merry as they deal with threats to firebomb black churches in Tennessee on Christmas Eve. Leo is also lacking the holiday spirit as he prepares to testify to the House committee concerning the non-disclosure of Bartlet's MS issue -- and the $650 an hour he's paying his lawyer doesn't help any. Flashbacks reveal the President's reasons for not disclosing his illness during his time as governor.

Episode Quotes |
| |
Mrs. Landingham: Governor, does it frustrate you to constantly aim for humour and yet miss so dramatically? | Cliff: This is why good people hate us. This, right here. This thing. This isn't what these hearings are about. He cannot possibly have been properly prepared by counsel for these questions, nor should he ever have to answer them publicly. And if you proceed with this line of questioning, I will resign this Committee, and wait in the tall grass for you, Congressman. Because you are killing the party. | Mike: In thirteen years with the bureau I've discovered that there's no amount of money, man-power or knowledge that can equal the person you're looking for being stupid.
Bartlet: God, well, some of the stupidest criminals in the world are working right here in America. I've always been very proud of that. | Leo: Don't help me.
Josh: I'm gonna help you, 'cause you know why?
Leo: 'Cause you walk around with so much guilt about everybody you love dying that you're a compulsive fixer? | Abbey: Sam Seaborn's very funny.
Bartlet: Which one is he?
Abbey: The young one.
Bartlet: They're all young. |

Episode References |

Bartlet: Well, well, well.
Bartlet: Dodged a bullet.
Leo: For the moment.
Bartlet: Which is more than I can say for me in Rosslyn.
Bartlet is referring to him being shot in episode entitled "What Kind of Day it has been?" | Leo: Don't help me.
Josh: I'm going to help you, 'cause you know why?
Leo: 'Cause you walk around with so much guilt about everybody you love dying
that you're a compulsive fixer?
Josh: No, Leo, no. It's 'cause a guy is walking down the street and he falls into
a hole, see.
This is a reference to the episode "Noel" where Leo tells a story to Josh about a guy who falls in a hole.
Leo: This guy's walking down a street, when he falls in a hole. The walls are so
steep. He can't get out. A doctor passes by, and the guy shouts up "Hey you! Can you
help me out?" The doctor writes him a prescription, throws it down the hole and moves
on. Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up "Father, I'm down in this hole, can you
help me out?" The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then
a friend walks by. "Hey Joe, it's me, can you help me out?" And the friend jumps in
the hole! Our guy says "Are you stupid? Now we're both down here!" and the friend says,
"Yeah, but I've been down here before, and I know the way out." |
