Recap

It is a misty night and mournful foghorns sound from time to time. A constable walks his beat along the pier whistling a happy tune. Behind some crates lurk two men, an immense cloaked figure and a much smaller man in a suit and hat. The smaller man nods; the larger man moves very silently from someone his size, seizing and quickly overpowering the constable...

Episode Quotes
Artemus: It’s not you I’m worried about. I just don’t like to break in a whole new partner!

Loveless: (impatiently waiting for his victim to appear) Come on, Neilsen! If there’s anything I can’t stand, it’s a dawdler!!

James: With an explosive like that, one man, just one man, could bring a whole nation to its knees!

Loveless: Ah, Greta, you’ve done what I was unable to do. You’ve brought Mr. West. But with one serious oversight. You’ve brought him alive!!

Loveless: An explosive like that in the hands of politicians and generals? Vermin, ought to be exterminated...every one of them!

Loveless: (his plans in ruin) You… meddler! You interfering meddler. You…vile…egregious…secret service man! (starts to cry)

Analysis
They're vermin; they should be exterminated!
Loveless has no use for politicians and generals. This foreshadows the eventual location of his explosive charge next to the governor's mansion - a likely place to exterminate a hefty batch of politicians. Jim doesn't need to pick up on this, since he is able to obtain the information from Greta by befriending and seducing her.

The crossbow bolt
West is lucky that Loveless attempted his assassination by crossbow personally, for it is likely that the doctor's weapon was scaled to his size and strength. Crossbows were developed to penetrate armor; at a range of a few yards, the lid of a barrel would not have stopped the quarrel fired by a full sized weapon. Loveless may have selected the crossbow because it is relatively silent and far easier to learn than the longbow.
