Keenan Wynn was originally hired to play Sordo. However, Frank Silvera was brought in to replace Wynn when Wynn's horse threw him several times and he suffered cracked ribs.

Artemus: Hey, this assignment is going to be a lot more fun than I thought.
James: Artie, she wasn't smiling at you.
Artemus: Says who she wasn't?
James: She was smiling at Jack O'Diamonds.
Artemus: What's he got that I haven't?
James: A better pedigree.

El Sordo: You know, I am not a religious man, but if somehow I could find myself in a cantina with a pretty girl at this moment, I would become one.

Sordo: Hey, you are not bad for a gringo.
James: Yeah, what do you know about gringos?
Sordo: Not much. I try to avoid them. It's bad company.
James: Yeah? What about you?
Sordo: Oh, not so good company either. I am a bandit. I rob a little. Sometimes I kill a little. It's not a very good living, but it's all I got.

El Sordo: I always win, amigo. It is a bad habit of mine.

James: Why'd you steal that horse? It was a great risk just for a horse.
El Sordo: Risk? Si, but not just the horse. You know what it is like to be a man like Sordo? Great ugliness. Even my face, ugly. Look at this country--cold in the night, hot in the day. Ugliness. Dust, sand, rocks. Snakes, scorpions. Life and death--it is nothing. Yet it is where I live. Where I survive. Not very pretty, huh? But when I see that horse--ay! That is beautiful. To have him, to look at him and say that he is mine. Aye, that is--that is beauty.

El Sordo: For me it is survival. I have survived a long time, amigo. For you it is different, for you it is an ugly little man we call Juarez who waits for this horse. You know Juarez?
James: No, I've never met him.
El Sordo: He is an ugly little Indian, like myself, born in misery. What a man, what man. Benito Juarez is Mexico. And he awaits my horse. Oh ho ho, what a beauty you are, like a star--like a star in my pocket. Why were you ever born?

Mario Alcalde mangles the pronunciation of "Enrique" when he finds the dead bandit, calling him, "Entigee."

As Jim descends down the cliff face on his rappelling line, in some shots there's a safety line going from the winch to his waist. In other shots it disappears entirely.

Jim tells Sordo that he's never met Juarez. However, they met twice, in the second season episode "TNOT Eccentrics," and earlier in the third season in "TNOT Assassin."
