Episode Quotes |
| |
ASTRONAUT [V/O]: Houston, we have a preliminary...
Narrator/Adult: The transition from summer to fall is a tricky one. Like astronauts returning from space...We had to re-enter the atmosphere of school carefully, so the sudden change in pressure wouldn't kill us.
MALE [V/O]: You brought 'em in beautifully.
Narrator/Adult: Still, the beginning of eight grade looked like it was gonna be a smooth landing. We weren't the lowest men on the totem pole anymore. We were men...among seventh-grade boys. More importantly, we were men among seventh-grade girls. In social-studies, we talked about Woodstock.
Coach Cutlip: Men...These...are ropes.
Narrator/Adult: In gym, we were introduced to the obvious. In French...Mrs. Martinson showed us slides from her trip to Paris. (The slide changes to one of the teacher sitting on a park bench, holding flowers and smiling, as a Frenchman leans close near her neck)
Miss Martinson: Wrong slide...
Narrator/Adult: Yep - everything was looking A-OK. All systems "go". Until fourth period.
Mr. Collins: Take your seats and open your textbooks...
To unit one. Page sixteen. We will begin...with the introduction to variables.
Kevin: Who is this guy?
Mr. Collins: My name is Mr. Collins. If we use a symbol, such as "X" to represent the unspecified...Member of the set...
Narrator/Adult: So much for introductions.
Mr. Collins: In a Venn diagram. "S" is the replacement symbol for the variable "X".
Narrator/Adult: We'd never seen anything like him. He was a math machine. All math...all the time. With the chalk marks to prove it. Faced with this implacable force...We rose to the challenge.
(A girl timidly raises her hand)
Mr. Collins: Yes?
Girl: Mr. Collins, how did you learn to draw such neat circles?
Narrator/Adult: Each in our own way.
Mr. Collins: It is not necessary to draw perfect circles to do these problems correctly - it will not affect your grade either way.
(Harold raises his hand)
Narrator/Adult: But nothing distracted him.
Harold: Is this like stuff that you could use to figure out Tom Seaver's earned-run average?
Mr. Collins: No...That would be simple arithmetic. |

Episode Goofs |
| |
After Mr. Collins draws the Venn Diagram on the board, the drawing consistantly changes between shots. | Even though the tests were supposed to be different, Kevin's first and second test papers are exactly the same. |
