Episode Notes

Robin Lynn Heath, who plays Lori, previously guest starred as Tina in the episode "Heartbreak".

There was a line which never made it into the episode. After Paul hold the rubber in Kevin’s face:
Kevin: "You don't have to rub it in my nose".
Paul: "No, it's not for your nose, it's for your -"
Kevin: "Enough, Paul!"
The producers probably thought that was too much. Yet they decided to leave in the final scene where Cara puts Kevin’s hand on her ... "heart."

Episode Quotes

Narrator: I wanted to stay there, in that night... more than anything I wanted before. But I knew I couldn't. I was fifteen. I slept under a roof my father owned, in a bed my father bought. Nothing was mine, except my heart, and my fears. And my growing knowledge that not every road was going to lead home anymore.

Kevin: Paul, let's go!
Paul: I'm coming! I'm putting on bugspray.
Kevin: Well, hurry up!
Narrator/Adult: And that was me, Kevin Arnold. And that August there was pretty much only one thing on my mind.
Kevin: Paul, come on, let's get outta here!
Debbie Pfeiffer: Hi, Kevin...
Kevin: Hi, Deb. Paul, come on!
Paul: (shoves by Debbie out the cabin door) Move!
Debbie: Where you guys going?
Paul: None of your business.
Narrator/Adult: Where we went didn't matter. Getting away was all that counted.
Jack: Say...you boys want to do some fishing?
Kevin: No thanks, Dad!
Narrator/Adult: After all, we had more important things to do.
Paul: So, what do you want to do?
Kevin: Got me...

Narrator/Adult: Over the summer my best friend had gained two things...A new set of contact lenses...And a new set of hormones.
Paul: I could be home right now, making time with Julie Zeller.
Kevin: Heh, you're dreaming, pal!
Paul: And I'd probably gotten to second base by now.
Kevin: Oh, right. Like you would even know what to do.
Paul: I know what to do.
Kevin: Give me a break.
Paul: Yeah? Listen. It just so happens, I got a certain 25-cent little insurance policy, huh? (pulls out his wallet)
Narrator/Adult: The famous Pfeiffer condom. Paul had been bragging about it ever since he got it in July.'
Kevin: Paul, not again...
Narrator/Adult: It was kind of his rabbit's foot.
Paul: You know Douggie Sherman? Well...He picked up about two dozen of these things in a men's room near St. Louis. I got mine off him for fifty cents...
(a local girl Cara pulls up in the back of a truck)
Narrator/Adult: But suddenly, I wasn't listening anymore.
Paul: Which is a pretty good deal, considering the...Here it is! The Red Chief Special!
Kevin: Paul, you don't need to rub it in my nose!
(Cara's ride pulls away)
Kevin: Come on. Let's get out of here.
Narrator/Adult: Fact.
Paul: Sorry...
Narrator/Adult: After 3-1/2 days of hanging out, even my best friend was starting to get on my nerves.

Narrator/Adult: We were stranded. At a drive-in - with no car, fifty cents in our pockets, and no place to go but..."Planet of the Apes". And then it happened...(Kevin sees Cara's truck)
I knew that truck. I knew that girl. And I knew what I had to do.
Kevin: Let's go talk to her.
Paul: Are you crazy? We don't even know her!
Narrator/Adult: Great. Mr. Condom-in-his-wallet was afraid of locals.
Kevin: Look, Paul - you're the one who said you wanted to meet girls.
Paul: OK.
(they walk up to the truck while "Planet Of The Apes plays in the foreground )
Narrator/Adult: OK...All I needed was a snappy opening.Kevin: (to Cara) You, uh...got another cigarette?
Cara: Sorry. Bummed this one myself.
Kevin: Oh.
Cara: You can have a drag on mine if you want.
(Kevin takes a puff and coughs as Paul watches in shock)
Narrator/Adult: My goal was to appear like I'd been doing this my whole life.
Cara: You don't smoke, do you?
Kevin: Oh, uh...sometimes.
Cara: You shouldn't. (Smiles) It doesn't flatter you.
Kevin: Oh?...What about you?
Cara: I shouldn't either.
Narrator/Adult: The thing is, for some reason...I couldn't breathe.
Kevin: So...where're you from?
Cara: Here.
Kevin: (jokingly) Where, the drive-in?
Cara: About a half-mile from here.
Kevin: I'm Kevin. (Paul nudges Kevin) and...this is Paul.
Paul: Hi.
Cara: Hey. Cara.
Billy: Hey, Cara! You wanna hang out, or you want to go?
Cara: Whatever. I think my brother wants to split.
Kevin: Well, it was nice talking to you, Cara.
Paul: Yeah.
Kevin: And maybe we'll see you around.
Cara: Yeah. Maybe.
Narrator/Adult: And that was it. Except, that in that brief wrinkle of time, I knew beyond a doubt...That something had happened...something big.
Cara: Hey! If you're around tomorrow night...I'll be here.
Narrator/Adult: I guess she knew it too.

Narrator/Adult: I guess somehow, I just kept hoping something would happen.
Ida Pfeiffer: Ahhhhhh!
Narrator/Adult: And then, it did.
Ida Pfeiffer: Look. Alvin...(waving something in her hand) Alvin, look at this. (Debbie smiles as Ida holds up Paul's condom) What is it? What is this? Look what my son has.
Paul: Oh my Gosh! My wallet! (reaches in his back pocket)
Ida Pfeiffer: Where'd he get this from?
Jack: I got one! I got one! (Jack pulls a fish from the lake)
Narrator/Adult: Guess you could call it a red-letter day.

Jack: (proudly) Here we go!
Norma: Eat up. Fish turned out great, honey. Aren't you all proud of your father?
Wayne: (sarcastically) Yeah, we've got fish for days, hehehh.
Wart: Yeah, we've got fish for days.
Narrator/Adult: Of course I was more than glad to be there for Dad's moment of triumph.
Kevin: Well, I gotta run.
Norma: Honey? Run where?
Kevin: To the drive-in. You know, with Paul.'
Wayne: 'Fraid not, honeybunch. The Pfeiffster's not going anywhere. Mr. Rubberhead's grounded for life. Hahahahah.

(Kevin and Cara alone in Billy's truck)
Narrator/Adult: That night, huddled in that cab, we put the whole world behind us.(Cara adjusts the radio)
Narrator/Adult: I didn't know what would happen when I got home. It didn't matter.
Cara: You like this?
Kevin: Sure...Whatever.
Narrator/Adult: I had to be with Cara. I had to hold her.
I just couldn't bring myself to tell her...I was leaving.
Kevin: So. What do you want to do tonight?
Cara: : You're leaving aren't you?
Kevin: Yeah.
Cara: That's too bad.
Kevin: I'll miss you. (Cara looks dissapointed) What's wrong?
Cara: Nothing's wrong. I'll miss you too.
Kevin: W...We can still see each other. Uh...I get my license in a few months, I could...you know...drive up.
Cara: (unconvinced) Yeah.
Kevin: On weekends.
Cara: Yeah... I think I got to hang out with my brother tonight.
Narrator/Adult: I was losing her. I guess I knew I had to, but.
Kevin: Don't be like that!
Cara: Sorry.
Kevin: Look, I want to stay. You know that. You gotta know that, more than anything!
Narrator/Adult: But there was nothing more I could say. Except...
Kevin: I'm sorry.
Cara: I'm not
(Cara grabs Kevin's hand and places on her heart, slowly moving down on her chest. They kiss)
Narrator/Adult: I wanted to stay there, in that night. More than anything I'd wanted before. But I knew I couldn't. I was fifteen. I slept under a roof my father owned, in a bed my father bought. Nothing was mine. Except my heart. And my fears. And my growing knowledge...that not every road was going to lead home, anymore.
