"Psychokinesis? You mean how Carrie got even at the prom?": Carrie
Scully's words to Mulder after he tells her that psychokinetic powers were used to keep the two dead bodies in the Bethesda Naval Hospital's morgue warm hours after they had died is a reference to the 1974 Stephen King novel, and subsequent 1976 Brian de Palma film, about Carietta "Carrie" White, who is the subject of bullies at her high school. Possessing dormant telepathic and psychokinetic abilities since birth, her emotional distress becomes so pronounced that one day she is able to rekindle her abilities in the form of psychic manipulation of her surroundings. More information on the novel and film can be found here and here. | "They're here": Poltergeist
Scully's response to Mulder's talk of a poltergeist being involved in their car accident is a reference to the 1982 Tobe Hooper film Poltergeist. The line Scully quotes is from the child in the movie named Carol Anne, who can communicate with the poltergeists. More information about the movie can be found here. |
