The X Factor returned for a second series in August 2005. Kate Thornton returned as host and all three judges also returned. The series had six audition shows this time around.

Just like the first series the successful contestants went to boot camp where the judges learned what section of the competition they would be mentoring. The contestants were put through their paces by the judges and this time the judges had to select four acts to take through to the live finals.

The twelve acts then went into the live finals with one act being eliminated each week. Like the first series, the two acts with the lowest amount of public votes had to sing again in the final showdown and the judges then decided which of the two acts would be sent home. Simon lost two of his acts in the first two weeks of the finals.

The final of the second series saw three acts in it this time around. Shayne Ward (mentored by Louis Walsh), Journey South (mentored by Simon Cowell) and Andy Abraham (mentored by Sharon Osbourne) battled it out for the title. Journey South were eliminated first leaving Andy and Shayne to battle it out to become the second series champion. In a very close result Shayne just pipped Andy to be crowned the champion.
