  Season 3 (Series 3)  
The X Factor returned for a third series on August 12, 2006. The first episode looked at what has happened to last year's finalists since appearing on the show. Kate and all three judges returned for the third series and once again this year there was six open audition shows. The boot camp shows followed where the judges learned what section of the competition they would be mentoring. The contestants then had to convince the judges that they should make it through to the live finals. Once again each judge had to select four to take through to the live finals.

As per last year, the twelve acts then went into the live finals with one act being eliminated each week. The two acts with the lowest amount of public votes had to sing again in the final showdown and the judges then decided which of the two acts would be eliminated. An extra twist was added this year with a double elimination in the third of the live shows.

The final of the third series reverted back to the same format as the first series with just two acts being in the final. The final saw Leona Lewis and Raymond Quinn (both mentored by Simon Cowell) battling it out to be crowned the series champion. Leona Lewis triumphed to become the first female winner of the series.
