Middle-aged Eddie and Joy Stark are closing in on day 9,000 of their marriage and have the battle scars to prove it. Their new next-door neighbors are young newlyweds Steph and Jeff Woodcock - idealistic, passionate, adorable and married for a matter of weeks. It's a show about new marriage versus old marriage, about keeping the romance alive - or at least staying together so you have someone to drive you to the hospital for your operations. Eddie is a cynical realist who considers himself an expert on most topics. A high school history teacher, he's learned well the lessons of history and applies the basic principles to his marriage: all fights are about power, land and resources. A veteran of the marriage wars, Eddie freely gives his advice to the younger, idealistic Jeff, who's the new vice principal at Eddie's school. After Eddie accidentally puts the patio furniture out of commission, Joy dreads dealing with Eddie to replace it until Steph tells her about a special type of deal she makes with Jeff to make it easier. With the women fully utilizing the power of temptation, Eddie and Jeff must take a stand to salvage what remains of their manhood. Its war as the two married couples deal with distressed patina finishes in a power struggle over who wears the pants and who buys the furniture.
When the Woodcocks and the Starks go out for a thank-you dinner, Joy yearns for more romance from Eddie and asks him why she never received the engagement ring she was promised. With a little help from Jeff, Eddie gives Joy a ring.
Joy has had enough with the woodpile that Eddie uselessly keeps in the garage, and finally gives him an ultimatum: use it or lose it. When Eddie realizes that Joy may have a point, he desperately sets out to hold onto his pride and his woodpile, seeking the help of their newlywed neighbors Steph and Jeff Woodcock.
When Eddie tells Joy that hes practicing with his band, he feels he has to lie to her, but Joy already knows what Eddie is actually doing.
Jeff is thrilled when his mother comes for a visit, but tension builds between him and Steph when he chooses his mother over her. Jeff goes to his neighbors for help, but ends up more conflicted than ever. Between Joy insisting he send his mom home and Eddie instructing him to secretly make his mom No. 1, Jeff must learn the delicate art of balancing the women in his life.
Steph and Jeff convince Eddie and Joy to join them for a getaway in the mountains, but when Steph tells Jeff she had an erotic dream about Eddie, their vacation is anything but relaxing for the Woodcocks. And when Eddie hears the news, he becomes the Dream Weaver.
After an injury sends Eddie to the hospital, he returns home certain that he is living his last days. With fear of the worst looming over them, Eddie and Joy rekindle their love. Eddie enjoys his renewed romance so much that when a phone call gives him a clean bill of health, he decides not to share the news with his wife. Eddie takes advantage of the situation and gets it while he can.
Eddie and Joy disagree over whether a plugged-in toaster uses electricity even when it's not in use, and Eddie can't stand it when he's proven wrong. Meanwhile, Jeff is planning a surprise birthday party for Steph.
Allison arrives home to spend the holidays. But a problem between Allison and her boyfriend leaves Eddie feeling left out when she seeks mom for advise. Eddie goes out of his way to impress Allison at the New Years party, but she comes to the notion she prefers her dad the way he is.
Eddie and Joy attend a lavish 25th-anniversary party thrown by his garage-band buddy Stan. Not surprisingly, it becomes a disaster for Eddie, whose bad times begin rolling when Joy asks him to check her wrap in the hotel's cloakroom. And things don't go much better for Jeff, who can't stand to dance. Steph loves to, of course, and she's very aggressive about it.
When Steph confesses to Jeff, a confirmed hockey fanatic, that she hates the sport, he feels as though the basis for their relationship has crumbled. Eddie quickly disabuses him of the notion, but then fears that he and Joy are becoming too much alike.
Joys turns to Nicole when she and Eddie get into a fight. When Eddie talks to Joy about Nicole, they get into an argument, with Nicole taking Joy's side and Cofeld taking Eddie's side.
Joy allows Eddie to have a female friend and the two end up bonding over their history. Meanwhile, Jeff tries to use Steph to look cool to the high school students.
The guys learn that Jeff never had a bachelor party, leading them to plan a boys night at a nightclub. But when Nicole tags along with Cofeld, the night does not go as planned.
when Joy accuses Eddie of being a pack rat, he and Jeff go through piles of ancient items from Eddie's past and come across an old roll of film. When Eddie sees the photos of himself and Joy having a great time in Italy, he is reminded of how the vacation ended and a moment he and Joy never discuss. In order to make things right, Eddie does all he can to relive their trip to Italy right there in the suburbs of Philadelphia.
When Eddie and Joy visit Allison for parents weekend, they share a dorm room with a partying single father. When Allison lets them know her new major and next semesters plans, Eddie and Joy try their best to convince her to do otherwise but realize that their own mistakes led them to where they are today. Meanwhile, Jeff hires someone to help Steph tile the bathroom, which brings out the worst in her.
When the Woodcocks strike up a close friendship with the Cofelds, the Starks feel left out. Much to their surprise, they find they really miss their time with Jeff and Steph. Eddie and Joy set out to win the Woodcocks' friendship back.
Steph gives Eddie and Joy a cappuccino maker that was a wedding gift from Jeff's mom. Joy loves the gift, but Eddie soon begins to resent Joy for not learning how to work the machine herself. When Eddie refuses to make Joy her nightly cappuccino, she makes a list of all the things she does around the house and comes to the conclusion that Eddie doesn't do enough. To compensate for their uneven workload, Joy gives Eddie the chore of paying the bills, which later proves not to be in the best interest of their household. Meanwhile Jeff is mad at Steph for giving away a present from his mom, and he tries to come up with a plan to get back at her.
When Joy and Allison meet for Spring Break in Florida, Eddie is thrilled to have the house to himself where he can eat, sleep, wear whatever he wants and hang out with Cofeld. But when the week doesn't go exactly as planned, Eddie realizes how much he misses Joy. Meanwhile, Joy and Allison aren't missing Eddie too much as they work it on the beach.
When one of Eddie's single idols comes for a visit, Eddie is in awe, while Joy is unimpressed by Webby's lifestyle of wild adventures and exotic travels. To Joy, Webby is running away from the one thing that can make him truly happy: a committed relationship. Ignoring Eddie's warnings, Joy sets Webby up with Denise, who tames Webby's ways. When Webby is ready to settle down, Denise lets Joy know that she's not interested. Meanwhile, Jeff is miserable at the sight of his crying wife in an incredibly ugly shirt.
Summer vacation has begun and Allison surprises her parents when she brings Doug home. When Allison and Doug spend their days enjoying the summer, Steph convinces Eddie to join them. Meanwhile, Jeff and Joy feel left out and annoyed by their partners' happiness but finally get convinced to join in.
After going to Steph's birthday party, Eddie decides to confront Joy about her habits that irritate him. But when Joy isn't thrilled to hear about her social issuse, Eddie learns that Joy isn't the only oblivious one. Meanwhile, Jeff finds it difficult to give his wife a gift she's wanted for a long time.
Eddie and Joy are the only neighbors not invited to an elderly neighbor's funeral. But when Joy is invited to sing at the funeral, Eddie must go to extreme lengths to also be involved in the funeral.
Jeff runs into a rival vice principal from a private school and ends up signing up for a faculty basketball league. The team's secret weapon happens to be Eddie, a former basketball champion. However, Eddie is keeping a deep secret from nearly 20 years ago that even Joy is not aware of.
Jeff is made acting principal at the school, and is thrilled to finally have an opportunity to shine. However, Jeff chokes when making an important decision.
Jeff turns Joy on to tennis, and Steph turns Eddie on to yoga. (And both Steph and Eddie are flea-market fans as well.) This leads to Jeff-Joy and Steph-Eddie “dates,” which in turn lead to marital complications.
Eddie's refusal to sign a card for Jeff's birthday gift causes trouble at the party, as does his his attempt to make good the following day.
Eddie refuses to fix Joy's newly installed bed lamp, which unlike his, doesn't seem to work.Meanwhile, Steph wants Jeff to go to bed at the same time she does.
Jeff is elected the new acting principal, but is not taken seriously by the teachers. Allison's boyfriend, Doug, takes over Eddie's class after he is suspended by Jeff. Doug also has eyes on making it to Allison's bedroom.
As acting principal, Jeff struggles to make an important decision and suspends Eddie. Joy becomes annoyed by Steph whose attitude changed after her husband was promoted.
Eddie volunteers for a Big Brother program, after being guilted into it by Jeff and Steph. But the unexpected happen when he is given an adult to mentor instead of a kid. Meanwhile, Joy starts a jewelry business.
When Kenny is called a racist at a movie theater, he reacts in a way that causes Eddie to come to his defense. After the dust settles, Eddie decides that Kenny may have over-reacted and tries to prove it to him.
Joy and Eddie have a pregnancy scare leading Joy to convince Eddie to get a vasectomy. Eddie goes to Kenny for advice when he begins to have pre-operation nervousness and pretends that he wants more children in order to avoid a trip to the doctor.
In hopes of Eddie getting in touch with his true feelings, Joy accompanies Eddie to a couples seminar, and Kenny offers his assistance. Meanwhile, Steph and Jeff work on their own sensitivity problems.
When Eddie’s friend Karl introduces him to his second wife, Eddie becomes jealous of Karl’s relaxed marriage and convinces Joy that they should try out a “second marriage.” Joy has her own ideas of how a “second marriage” should be causing Eddie to re-think his suggestion.
Eddie tries to outdo Joy after she calls off their usual anniversary celebration and then gives him a gift, leading him to book a snorkeling trip to Hawaii which will require him to take swimming lessons first from Kenny.
Joy gets a speeding ticket and, when she can't flirt her way out of it, decides that she no longer looks sexy enough, so she drags Eddie with her to buy new lingerie, and considers plastic surgery. Meanwhile, Kenny and Tina continue fighting over custody of their dog.
Joy has a feeling that Eddie is going through a midlife crisis after purchasing a red corvette, so she begins flirting with a coworker for some attention. Meanwhile, Eddie sells his old jalopy to Kenny.
Eddie becomes jealous when Kenny becomes close friends with Joy, since he will listen to her when Eddie won't. Joy is sent to the hospital after Eddie crashes her 70's themed work party and has a disco mishap.
Allison, the college daughter of Eddie and Joy comes home for a visit. She breaks up with her hippie boyfriend, which suits Eddie fine until he discovers that Doug's family is rich. Now they must find a way to get them back together, which includes an organic dinner. Meanwhile, Kenny would just like to have his bedroom once again.
A romantic night in the city has Joy feeling that they should sell their home in the suburbs for a dwelling downtown, an idea which doesn't settle well with Eddie...at least at first.
Kenny freaks out after losing his swim trunks at a water park and his new girlfriend notices he isn’t circumcised. When he decides to go under the knife, Joy is impressed by his efforts to please a girl he hardly knows and badgers Eddie to do more nice things for her.
Eddie tries to get Kenny to back out of his decision so he won’t have to accompany Joy to six weeks of musicals in the park and takes him to a bris so he can see what circumcision looks like.
Joy discovers that Eddie has held a secret from her for 20 years now, he goes to a deli to buy a meatball sandwich. Instead of getting upset, Joy decides to keep her own secret from Eddie.
Fresh back from the Ecuadorean rain forest with her husband Doug, daughter Ally sets up camp in the Starks' backyard.
After years of living with each other's sleeping habits, Joy and Eddie decide to get separate beds. Meanwhile, a former student with an agenda ends up being Eddie's new principal.
When Doug's father gives him and Ally a large amount of money, they debate keeping it or giving it back.
When Eddie and Joy try to live without complaining, Eddie finds that holding back his feelings make him sick. Meanwhile, Kenny works as a mall Santa.
Eddie and Joy visit Eddie's parents in Florida where he discovers that his parents are going to get a divorce in order to qualify for medical insurance. Not willing to accept the divorce, Eddie convinces his mother that it's a bad idea to put his father back on the market as a single man.
Joy's fun and beautiful new friend Eileen also happens to be Eddie's ex-girlfriend. At first, the friendship doesn't seem to be a problem until Joy invites Eileen over to the house and Eddie gets himself in trouble by reminiscing a little too fondly about the past. Meanwhile, Kenny thinks he's doing something nice for his new girlfriend by babysitting her kids, but doesn't realize she may be using him
After Kenny's ex-wife kicks him out of their house, Eddie invites Kenny to stay with him and Joy. Eddie quickly realizes that Joy is a lot nicer when Kenny is around, so Eddie tries to get Kenny to stay with them longer, but Kenny's annoying habits have Joy trying desperately to reconnect the estranged couple
Joy has to try to find a new job after she loses her job at the travel agency. Meanwhile, Eddie takes Doug to his favorite restaurant.
Joy decides to join in on Eddie's spending spree when he buys an HD television without asking her first. Meanwhile, Doug thinks he's living in a sitcom.
When Joy urges Eddie to get a check-up from their doctor, Simona (Susan Yeagley), Eddie becomes enamored with her and her husband, Stephen (Kevin Nealon), and their seemingly perfect life. Joy becomes annoyed when Eddie becomes ardent about taking Simona’s advice, even though Joy has been nagging him for years, and decides to prove to Eddie that Simona isn’t as perfect as she seems.
When Eddie attends their annual baseball game without Joy, they realize that they can have separate lives, but at what cost? Meanwhile, Ally and Doug try to save a tree but end up causing a neighborhood tree-disease epidemic.

Kenny's boring new job at the copy store gives him ideas for riches with the Lost Pet Recovery business. Joy and Eddie accidentally discover role playing enriches their sex life.
The Stark house seems to be where all the bums hang out, since Doug and Ally have not been motivated to get jobs or improve on their slacker lives in the motor home in the back yard; also Eddie mistakenly offers for Whitey to move in when Duffy breaks up with him. Eddie and Joy look to abandon them all by finding a townhouse just big enough for the two of them.
While on vacation, Eddie and Joy make the wrong impression on a newlywed couple; Allison gets jealous when Kenny and Doug start hanging out together.

Joy loses her job at the school because of an offhand comment about her looks, so the play she was directing (_Cats_) falters.
Ally's baby is near due, so it is time for the baby shower. Whitey has anxiety after giving an extravagant gift. Joy takes baby-proofing to an extreme. Doug relapses his sitcom-osis.
Whitey's irritable ninety-three year old uncle comes to stay, since he cannot get along in the senior citizens' center. Whitey, a hoarder, wants to throw him a surprise birthday party.
Allison starts contractions, so hilarity ensues at the hospital. While Joy tries to control the delivery room, assorted family members gather in the waiting room delivering humor and parenting advice to Doug.
Joy is embarassed when the rest of the family corrects her about mispronouncing a word to a waitress while out to dinner. She decides to go back to college to complete her degree, which she gave up to have marriage and family. She finds out that her bad habits in college are universal, since she is now the stable voice in her study group.
Eddie forgets Joy's birthday, AGAIN!, so he creates another coupon, which Joy adds to the pile of 20 years' coupons to date. When Kenny demonstrates that Joy is not hard to buy for, she decides to cash in 20 years of Eddie's coupons. OR, he can buy her something. Kenny helps by taking him to "his guy".
Joy is suspicious when Eddie makes a point of notifying Kenny that "Joy's in the car" when he receives a phone call over the car system. She makes a concerted effort to discover what he's hiding from her, diving deeper into Eddie's dissembling than she really intended.
