At last something original!
I have been looking forward to seeing Fringe for a long time (don't panic I am about to pen thoughts about True Blood). I was so dissappointed with Fringe: formulaic, derivative, wooden acting. My dissappointment led me to look for something new and I discovered True Blood.

With True Blood I haven't enjoyed something so different from the US for ages. The characters are sad, funny, annoying, innocent. There are lots of story lines running throughout and they make the show a comedy in one scene, a drama in another, a love story in another and a murder mystery runs throughout. The storylines running through the show include the sexual awakening of the main character, the daft brother and his need for wild sexual adventures, the heroine's friend's struggle with her alcoholic mother, the unrequited love of the boss for the heroine and the best character of all the gay black chef who steals every scene he is in.

I am assuming the Vampire's in True Blood symbolise the fear of Afro-American's in the Deep South or some such metaphor and I love how this is approached. This is brilliantly pulled off with the likeable gay black chef peddling drugs who is a thoroughly likeable and fun loving character against the Vampire's who are to be feared, mis-trusted and grudginly given rights.

I think this is the most thought provoking and multi-layered drama I have seen from the US in years and its so refreshing to see something a bit different and morally ambiguous. Great acting throughout.
