Thicker Than Water - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
Big Jim wakes up in the middle of the night when he hears someone moving in the house. He takes a gun out of his dresser and goes downstairs, and finds Junior standing there. Junior tells him to put down the gun but Big Jim demands to know why he's there. His son insists that Angie isn't there and Big Jim tells him that he knows that Junior shot and killed Clint Dundee. When Junior says that Clint got what he deserved, Big Jim warns him that he's not in his right mind and sounds just like his mother did before she died. Big Jim says that Junior is no son of his anymore and orders him out. As Junior goes, he tells his father to never talk about his mother that way again.

The next morning, Barbie goes out to the McAlister yard to dig a grave for Alice. Julia comes out and comments on how one Alice was born while another one died, in the same house on the same day.

Inside, Angie checks the refrigerator and complains to Joe that there isn't enough food. He points out that everyone is running out of foods and asks where she was. When Joe mentions that he had talked to Junior, Angie avoids answering his question and suggests that they go to the diner to get breakfast. As they go, Norrie comes downstairs and when Joe invites her to come with them, snaps at him and walks away, insisting that she doesn't need him to take care of her.

Later, Julia goes to Rose's diner to get coffee. Angie is serving food when Big Jim comes in. She tells him that Junior let himself in and said Clint would never hurt her again, and Big Jim promises Junior won't come after her again. The councilman asks what he can do to make it up to her and Angie asks him to get more food for the diner so they can open it. Big Jim says that he'll talk to Ollie and come to an arrangement, and warns her that they have to be smart from here on out because they'll have to farm their own food. Angie wonders if he means that the dome will be there forever, but Big Jim walks out without answering.

As Big Jim leaves, Julia notices Joe at a table, sketching the miniature dome he saw in the forest. When she comes over, Joe hastily crumples it up and throws it away.

In the forest, the black egg within the miniature dome continues to radiate streaks of pink light.

Big Jim drives out to Ollie's farm and tries to talk to him about the food shortage. When he offers to share resources and provide propane, Ollie figures that he can farm without an irrigation system so he doesn't need Big Jim's propane. The farmer figures that the townspeople will dump Big Jim when they realize that he can't feed them, and then turn to Ollie.

Barbie goes to the sheriff's department to continue helping her as a deputy. They hear someone moving in the back and go to investigate, and find Junior getting a shotgun. Linda admits that she doesn’t trust him after the shooting, and puts him on probation. Big Jim comes in and says that he needs help from Linda and Barbie. He ignores Junior and takes them into the office to tell them what Ollie is doing. Rather than negotiate, Big Jim plans to confiscate Ollie's property under eminent domain. Barbie questions the plan but Big Jim tells them to get Junior and Carter and meet him at Ollie's.

Joe, Angie, and Julia drive back to the McAlister house and Angie says that she's moving back in until their parents get back. Joe finds Norrie inside and she says that Carolyn is still in the bedroom with Alice's corpse. Norrie tells Joe that it was his idea to go to the center of the dome, and Alice had her heart attack when they touched it. She figures bad things happen when they're together and says that she's leaving with Carolyn as soon as her mother is ready to go. Norrie orders a shocked Joe away and he reluctantly goes.

Big Jim and the officers drive out to Ollie's farm and discover that he's gone. Before they can secure the well, Ollie and his men drive up and surround them. Ollie tells them that they're trespassing on his property and Big Jim tells him that they're taking it on his authority. The farmer is unimpressed and warns them that anybody standing with Big Jim should be ready to go without food. Carter refuses to leave the well so Ollie has one of his men, Wendell, shoot the boy in the kneecap. Barbie tells Linda to lower her gun and goes to Carter, and Ollie tells them that anyone else can expect the same treatment.

Junior walks over to Ollie and asks if he needs help, and Ollie tells him to take Big Jim's gun. Smiling, Junior walks over to his father and takes it, and Ollie repeats his order. Big Jim glares at Junior and then turns and goes.

Joe goes out to look at the fresh grave and Julia comes out. She assures him that women say things that they don't mean, and Joe talks about how he feels connected to Norrie at the egg. Julia wonders what he means and Joe reluctantly explains what they found. The editor tells him to take her to it right away and they set out.

Back at the sheriff's station, Big Jim tells Linda and Barbie that the three of them are going back. They warn that it will escalate things but Big Jim isn't interested in a diplomatic solution and says that he'll get some volunteers. As Big Jim walks off, Barbie gets an idea and points out the other artesian wells on the maps to Linda. She says that Ollie's family drained off the other wells and the reservoir as well. Barbie figures that if they destroy Ollie's well then the water will flow back to the reservoir. He suggests that they get fertilizer to make explosives and Linda says that Ollie has detonators at his farm.

At the diner, Big Jim rounds up a couple of dozen volunteers, including Phil. Barbie approaches him afterward and tells him about his plan. Big Jim wonders what happens if Barbie is wrong and they contaminate the water supply, and insists that they have to make an example out of Ollie. The councilman walks off and Linda tells Barbie that she'll delay Big Jim as long as he can.

At the Densmore farm, Ollie pours Junior a glass of water and asks why he's changing side. Junior says that Big Jim kicked him out and Ollie sympathizes, figuring Big Jim has been hard to live with since his wife died. When Junior says that his mother died in a car accident, Ollie explains that she committed suicide. Junior doesn't believe him but Ollie assures him that he'll always tell him the truth. He figures that Chester's Mill will be well rid of Big Jim when everything is done, and offers Junior a shotgun. Junior takes it and Ollie leaves him alone with his thoughts. As he goes, Junior makes him promise that he won't kill Big Jim... because he wants to do it.

As Joe takes Julia to the egg, he talks about how the dome brought them together and how they've paired off. Julia insists that she isn't "with" Barbie as they come to the clearing. The egg is now glowing pink and Julia kneels and tries to touch it. The miniature dome is still there and as she touches it, Joe says "The monarch will be crowned." Surprised, she discovers that Joe is still standing behind her, and the "Joe" speaking is a vision only she can see.

As they walk back to the McAlister house, Julia wonders if she's losing her mind. She tells him what she saw and Joe, surprised, says that "Alice" didn't say anything to them when they saw her. Julia repeats what the "Joe" said and neither one of them knows what it means. Joe wonders if something bad is going to happen to him like it did to Alice.

Barbie sneaks onto the Densmore farm and gets to the explosives that Ollie keeps in his shed. He mixes the fertilizer into bottles to create the explosives.

Angie goes to her room and finds Norrie on the bed, examining Junior's snow globe. Norrie says that she's been crashing there and talks about the Second Horizons Camp. Angie says that she's been there herself, and Norrie blames Alice for sending her there, figuring it's her fault that she died. As they talk, Angie talks about how her friend always brought back a snow globe when he went somewhere and looks at her collection of them. She tells Norrie that she promised she would always go to all of those places. Angie suggests that they do something to feel better and go out to the dome and smash the snow globes against the dome. As Norrie picks up a Los Angeles snow globe, where she lives, she falls to her knees sobbing. Angie holds her as Norrie blames herself for Alice's death.

That night, Big Jim leads his volunteers to the Densmore farm. They figure out where Ollie's men are but there's no sign of Junior. Linda wants to take it slow but Big Jim insists that they do it now and accuses Junior of betraying him. He notices that Barbie isn't there and realizes what he's doing. Big Jim tells everyone to move out before Barbie ruins their plan.

Barbie sneaks over to the well and plants the explosives. Meanwhile, the two sides spot each other and open fire. Wendell finds Barbie and disarms him, then gets close enough to attack the man. They fight and Barbie knocks Wendell to the ground.

The two sides continue fighting and one of Ollie's men shoots Phil in the arm. Linda runs over to him while Big Jim and the others continue firing. Barbie knocks out Wendell and sets off the makeshift bomb. Big Jim's men figure that it's over and run off, and Junior knocks out his father.

Ollie's men drag Big Jim into the house and Ollie is furious that he blew up the propane truck and the well. Big Jim denies blowing up the propane truck and Ollie slaps him. Ollie's men leave, figuring that it's over now that the well is destroyed, but Junior stays there. He asks Ollie what they're going to do now and the farmer tells Junior to do what he wanted.

Joe and Julia are walking home on the road when Linda almost hits them. She checks to make sure that they're okay and then drives Phil to the clinic.

Ollie watches as Junior accuses Big Jim of lying about how his wife died. Big Jim admits that it wasn't an accident and explains that she was unsteady for some time. One night they argued and she drove off, and a witness described how she deliberately rammed into a tree. Duke helped cover it up and make it look like an accident, and Big Jim paid off the witness. Junior wonders why he lied to him and Big Jim finally says that he didn't want him to know that she choose to leave Junior. As Big Jim breaks into tears, Ollie says that it's enough. Junior asks his father if it was the truth and Big Jim apologizes. Ollie prepares to shoot Big Jim and Junior shoots and kills him. He then tells Big Jim that he believes him and gives him his gun back.

Joe and Julia arrive at the house and find Norrie standing in the lawn by the grave. Julia advises Joe to be Norrie's friend for now and tell her what happened at the egg later. Joe goes over and Norrie immediately hugs him. She apologizes and then says that she's ready to bury her mom. Norrie says that they waited for him and Angie is all right, and Joe agrees.

At his office, Big Jim pours himself a drink as Barbie comes in. Barbie points out that five people died because of him, and explains that the reservoir is working again. Big Jim is happy but Barbie warns him that he can't control everyone. The councilman ignores the accusation and warns Barbie that he doesn't want him as an enemy. As he goes, Barbie warns him that the same applies in reverse.

Linda goes down to the cells and finds Junior sitting there. He explains that he killed Ollie to save Big Jim, and claims that the whole thing was a trick. Linda asks why he doesn't go home and Junior says that he doesn't have a home.

Barbie goes up to Julia's room and she repeats the phrase she heard. He has no idea what it means.

Angie watches as Joe and Norrie sit on the lawn, holding hands. She has a monarch butterfly tattoo on her shoulder.
