Wallace enlists Veronica's help when his new roommate, Piz, has all his belongings stolen. While working on Piz's case, Veronica learns that the campus serial rapist has struck again. Meanwhile, Keith runs into trouble while transporting a recently released convict across the country to reunite him with Kendall

Joe and Frank Hardy
Keith mentions this pair of fictional detectives in a retort that gently mocks Veronica's belief that he's out of step with modern times. The Hardy Boys detective novels appeared beginning in 1927 and were written (and in some cases revised) until 1979 by a series of authors writing as Franklin W. Dixon. Frank and Joe Hardy were, like Veronica, the children of a successful detective (Fenton Hardy). The books, written for children, focused on their adventures and cases.

In 1978, Glen Larson wanted the "space fighter pilots" of his series Battlestar Galactica (1978) to use coarse language without actually using coarse language. He solved this problem by inventing a portfolio of new epithets, of which frak was one. The recent reinvention of the show, Battlestar Galactica, kept this tradition.
| Donald Fagin
The "fagin" part of the character's name comes from the character Fagin, a criminal who appears in the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. Fagin trained children to steal for him, just as Donald Fagin does here. It is possible that the character's first name comes from musician Donald Fagen (spelled differently but pronounced the same way). Fagen is half of rock duet Steely Dan. Veronica and Piz first meet Donald Fagin when he advertises a guitar for sale that Piz believes may be his stolen property.
