Injured in a fall, the President of the United States is in desperate need of surgery -- and the operation must be kept secret. Naturally, Seaview is chosen as the best place for the operation. An enemy agent, taking the place of the doctor who would have used a radiological device on the President, will attempt to kill the Commander-in-Chief with a deadly ray. Will she be discovered in time to save the President?
The concept of injecting a radioisotope and then using a magnetic force to affect only specific tissue is somewhat predictive. This approach is presently under exploration for the treatment of cancer. Called photodynamic therapy, it involves injections of a "photosensitizing agent" which is taken up by the cells of the body, but retained longer by neoplastic (cancerous) cells. After a suitable delay to allow healthy cells time to metabolize the agent, doctors use intense light to activate the agent. Directed at the site of disease, it transforms the agent into a deadly form of oxygen that kills cells near it (by subjecting them to lethal oxidative stress). This is conceptually how the MGQ device used in this episode functioned.
