Seaview is assigned the task of recovering a space problem, returned to earth from a deep space mission with valuable data. Its passenger is a specially designed robot equipped to collect data the same way a human would. The robot's store of information would thus be a roadmap describing what man would encounter, and helping him prepare. But something happened to the robot out there in space, and now it seems determined to destroy the submarine and all aboard her!
Robots were extremely popular in the science fiction of this era, including the killer robot meme (now sadly hackneyed). The robot here certainly drew inspiration from the design of Gort, a robot character that appeared in 1951's The Day The Earth Stood Still. That film, ironically, turned the killer robot concept sort-of inside out; this episode is much more straightforward. It is weakened by the lack of a concrete explanation for the robot's bad behavior. Certainly bad things happen for reasons that are poorly understood or never understood - but the episode declined to explore that in much depth, as well.
