Artie finds himself lying in a darkened chamber that he thinks looks familiar. Mrs. Frederic steps out and tells him that he’s been there before but he doesn’t remember it.
Artie wakes up from his dream and gets a message from Pete and Myka, who are just finishing a mission at a zoo. Artie admits he hasn’t located the hacker yet and the agents realize that he looks terrible. He tells them to get back as soon as they can. Once they cut off, Artie dozes off and finds him back in his nightmare as Mr. Frederic tells him to get up. Someone moves past him… and Artie wakes up to discover a woman has handcuffed him. She notes that he should recognize him but it’s been a while. She’s disabled his silent alarm and comments that Artie once claimed he was a simple professor. Artie finally realizes she’s Claudia Donovan. When he tries to walk away, Claudia electrifies the handcuffs, stopping him in his tracks. Artie says it’s been a long time ago and he wasn’t responsible for Joshua’s death. She insists he is and says that it’s payback time.
Later, Pete and Myka arrive and discover the warehouse door is open. They go in and discover that Artie is gone and the alarm was ripped out. They start looking for clues and Mrs. Frederic calls. She tells them to check the durational spectrometer to determine who else was in the room in the last five hours, but tells them the warehouse is under lockdown and they can’t leave.
Claudia takes Artie to Joshua’s old lab and informs him that Joshua isn’t dead. She explains that he’s “stuck.”
Pete and Myka check the spectrometer and scan back to get an image of Claudia as she abducts Artie. They see Artie speaking and read his lips. Pete reveals that his sister was deaf and he can read lips, and realizes that Artie said Claudia Donovan’s name. As Pete checks the records, they agree to ignore Mrs. Frederic’s orders. They find a file on Claudia showing that she was institutionalized.
Artie wonders why Claudia has her there and she says that “it” is strongest there. She plans to bring Joshua back and insists it was Artie’s fault.
Pete and Myka go to see Claudia’s landlady, Mrs. Richman. Six months ago she checked herself into a psychiatric clinic and then checked herself out two months ago. They check her room and find a detailed series of maps with Artie’s possible locations, as well as a photo of Joshua.
Claudia explains that Joshua visits her and she has taken it as far as she can. Now she needs Artie’s help. Artie has another waking nightmare and finds himself in a shadow laboratory where Joshua is there at the age where they first met. His younger sister Claudia is there as well. Artie snaps out of it and Claudia recognizes the symptoms. She says she’s been going through the same thing. Claudia starts to choke as electricity sparks throughout the lab and a wind blows. A ghostly figure appears, shooting the lab and knocking Artie over. It briefly forms into Joshua’s image, reaching out for them, and then disappears. Artie demands answers and Claudia explains that Joshua isn’t dead. She has all the equipment necessary to recreate Joshua’s experiment and wonders why Artie never did.
Pete and Myka search Claudia’s books including material by Rheticus, a student of Copernicus. Myka notices that one book is missing.
Artie tries to warn Claudia she’s playing with dangerous forces and she admits she hacked into Artie’s research and discovered he never did anything to help Joshua. She wavers again and Artie points out her connection to the experiment is weakening her. Artie knows that Rheticus was trying to perfect teleportation and Joshua was trying to recreate his experiments.
At Claudia’s apartment, Myka finds a sketch of a supposedly legendary compass. They figure the compass is an artifact.
Claudia frees Artie, who notes that the compass disappeared with Joshua and minerals won’t be enough. He starts to shut down the experiment and Claudia accuses him of doing the same thing he did before, leaving her and Joshua alone. She insists on rescuing her brother, who helped raise her, and begs Artie for help.
Pete and Myka are leaving when Pete’s cell phone rings. Artie tells them that he’s with Claudia and they have nothing to worry about. However, when they explain he’s been at a psychiatric clinic, he has second thoughts. However, he tells them not to interfere and hangs up.
Pete and Myka go back to the warehouse and discover Mrs. Frederic waiting for them. She’s not happy that they disobeyed orders but Myka insists they had a lead and then explains what happened. Mrs. Frederic admits she might know where Artie is, but tell them that they need to go through the Rheticus files on the warehouse floor. Rheticus’ experiment worked but Joshua’s didn’t, and they need to figure out why before Artie is lost. Mrs. Frederic warns that each artifact is connected to a person and they have to figure out the connection to Rheticus. As she leaves, Mrs. Frederic admits that she cares a great deal about Artie and then leaves.
Artie starts recreating Joshua’s experiments using Ben Franklin’s lighting rod from his emergency travel kit. He brings up Claudia’s time in the psych ward. Claudia brings out Joshua’s journal and they start going through it.
Myka and Pete sort through all of Rheticus’ gadgets and study his notes. They realize Rheticus was obsessed with rules and order and find a secret panel on one of the artifacts.
Artie prepares to boost the power in the experiment while Claudia starts weakening again. Artie starts to weaken as well and has another flashback to one of his discussions with Joshua when the latter asked for grant money. He realizes they’re in Joshua’s laboratory and past-Joshua insists he can recreate Rheticus’ experiment. He has the compass and shows it to Artie. Artie snaps out of it as the electrical disturbance builds up again.
Pete and Myka find more hidden panels with inscriptions that show how to use the compass. They realize that Joshua only found the obvious inscriptions but didn’t notice the ones concealed behind a hidden panel.
Joshua appears in the lab and starts draining energy from Claudia. He calls out to Artie and warns that the lab is getting increasingly unstable. He tells Artie to save Claudia and destroy the equipment using the lightning rod, even though it will kill him.
Pete and Myka tell Mrs. Frederic what they’ve discovered and where he is. Mrs. Frederic is pleased they were able to figure it out without Artie, and Myka wonders if Artie is going somewhere. She tells them to use the directions in the file.
At the lab, Claudia wakes up and thanks Artie for his help. Artie remembers warning Joshua that the people that want teleportation are coming for it and he has to protect himself and his sister. He asks for the compass for safekeeping and goes for it in his office. Back in the present, Artie starts to destroy the equipment as Claudia realizes what he’s doing and that Joshua is coming.
In the past, Artie waits for Joshua and tries to reassure young Claudia. He takes her with him to check up on Joshua and promises not to let anything happen to her brother.
In the present, Artie apologizes to the weakening Claudia, saying he has to save one of them. Pete and Myka arrive as Joshua starts to arrive… and Artie remembers arriving at the lab to see Joshua using the compass to begin the teleport experiment. Pete and Myka insist they came to save him and that Joshua didn’t have all the rules: there’s a special set of instructions inside the compass. Artie remembers Joshua, desperate to prove he could teleport.
Artie tries to do what Joshua did and runs to the teleport field, telling Claudia he can save her brother. He places her in the center of the experimental area and they wait as Joshua appears. Artie, wearing a neutralizer glove, reaches out to Joshua and tells him to touch his hand. There’s an enormous burst of energy and Artie and Claudia both disappear.
Artie and Claudia find themselves in an interdimensional space with Joshua, who is as solid as they are. Joshua has the compass and Artie tries to solve the puzzle. Claudia realizes the key is “Thomas,” the name of a lover in one of Rheticus’ poems. There’s an inscription in Latin that gives directions to use the compass. They touch the compass and follow the instructions, and all three of them appear back in the real world.
Later, Artie congratulates Pete and Myka on their efforts, and he realizes that Mrs. Frederic helped them. Myka notes that it couldn’t have been easy for him to lose someone on the job, and offers to talk with him if he ever wants to discuss it. He doesn’t but offers to discuss it with her if she wants to talk about it.
Later, Mrs. Frederic comes to see Artie. He explains that he had to go back because he was responsible for Joshua’s disappearance. Artie was the one who pushed Joshua into attempting the experiment. Mrs. Frederic admits that they all mistakes and that she lost someone named Gus, but they can’t save everyone. She says that isn’t why she’s there and notes that Claudia has learned a great deal about the warehouse, and others might use her. She tells Artie that he knows what the options are.
