liked it better when they do a real cross-over ep. More tv-channels should have a number of their series set in the same tv-universe to allow characters from one to appear in other progs.

Similar (ish), I don't know why a movie studio hasn't done this: at any one time they've got a number of productions in progress, so also make a time travelling improvistion comedy film that pings in and out of the other films (to be filmed when those films are on a break). Kinda like a 'real life' Time Bandits.

Short answer on your question: Royalties.

When you cross over to other shows, the creator of the other show has to be paid.

Dick Wolf is still paying for John Munch on SVU. That character was created by someone else.
Sometimes the payment is worth it, sometimes it is not.
