Kris leaves juvenile detention and is hired by a local trainer to work with horses on a California ranch in dire financial straits. Her hiring is greeted with concern by Jean, the ranch's owner, but with enthusiasm by Jean's son. Things go well until Kris learns that Wildfire, a beloved horse, is to be sold and likely destroyed. Kris then risks being rearrested to prevent Wildfire's sale.
Kris returns to the Ritter ranch after being released from juvenile detention a second time. Later, Dani gets jealous when Matt pursues Kris, and she tries to get Kris in trouble with the law by tipping off a policeman about an illegal drag race that Kris is involved in.
Kris's substance-abusing mom, Barb, shows up unexpectedly at the ranch and the Ritter's invite her to stay, but then Jean's engagement ring is stolen and Kris accuses her mother.

The second season opens with Kris riding Wildfire in the finish of the Sandpiper Classic, which unfolds as a nose-to-nose race between Wildfire and Avatar. The close finish puts Kris in the middle of the media spotlight. Junior decides to try and make it in life with his own skills and no longer depend on his father. Meanwhile Dani is having a hard time dealing with the recent revelations about her family.
Kerry sets Kris up with an audition for a hot-sauce commercial, but she has no chemistry with the actor she must kiss. The director lets Junior kiss her and Kris gets the part, and her romance with Junior is reignited.
