Jaye Tyler, a college graduate working in a Niagara Falls souvenir shop, finds her life changed when a wax lion from a vending machine starts telling her what to do. Her family thinks she has lost it, and sends her to a therapist, but a brass monkey on his desk talks to her as well. On the up side, she meets a handsome young man who left his cheating wife during their honeymoon.

Jaye befriends a girl with a bad stutter, and helps her get a job at Wonderfalls. They really hit it off and it looks like they'll be good friends, but as the new girl gets more comfortable, her stutter starts to fade. She also begins to look and act more and more like Jaye, who begins to suspect her new friend, Bianca, is stealing her life.

When Jaye is told by a little wind-up penguin to help her, they soon find a priest who has been sent to bring her back. After initial misgivings, Jaye believes he's the one who needs help.

After ignoring a group of lawn flamingos, Jaye's father is seriously injured in an accident. Due to guilt, she is easily talked into helping Gretchen prepare for their six and a half year reunion. On the night of the reunion, Gretchen's rooster hairpin tells Jaye to destroy her. Jaye is devastated by the way she is apparently being told to hurt people instead of helping them.

5 :01x05 - Crime Dog (Unaired)
When the Tyler's beloved housekeeper, Yvette, is deported to Canada, a cow shaped creamer tell's Jaye to "bring her home". Aaron, who saw Jaye converse with the creamer, accompanies Jaye on her strange mission, becoming increasingly suspicious of his sister's behaviour, and demands to know why she has such an obsession with with inanimate objects.

The whole story is told in flashbacks from the police station where Jaye has been arrested, and Aaron, Sharon and Jaye are being questioned.

Jaye sees a strange woman milling around the falls. In the Barrel, Mahandra recognizes her as Millie Marcus, the first American woman to go over the falls in a barrel, and live. A toy barrel bear tells Jaye to "give it back to her", the confusion over what that means is compounded when another woman shows up claiming that she is the one who went over the falls and Millie is a fraud.

While opening the store early in the morning, the Barrel Bear and the Lovesick Ass start giving Jaye instructions on what to do. She soon realizes that Katya, a Russian mail order bride, is the one she is supposed to help. Unfortunately, the prospective husband that Katya came to America to marry is only thirteen years old, and with more than enough problems of his own. Eric decides to help Jaye on the task, which leads to feelings of jealousy and forces her to confront her true feelings for him.

For ammusement, Jaye invites her brother over to spy on an extremely fat neighbor. Surprisingly, he's not fat anymore, but when Jaye tries to help him, he thinks that she has a romantic interest. Another woman in the trailer park is on the verge of eviction because her pension checks are being delivered to Jaye, but the woman's Buffalo apron tells Jaye not to return them. Meanwhile, Aaron talks to psychiatrist Dr. Ron about Jaye's conversations with inanimate objects, but the session leaves the Doctor with questions about Aaron as well..

Eric and Jaye finally go out on a real date. They go to the zoo, where a canary on a sign gives Jaye instructions which cause havoc. To remedy the situation, she has to help a young woman from the zoo get two macaws to mate. The mating birds are seen as parallels for everyone involved. Jaye is convinced she has to break up with Eric if she really cares for him, Aaron and Mahandra get romantically involved, and Penelope, the zoo girl, realizes she has been so worried about the birds’ relationship, she has overlooked her own need for a companion.

It’s crisis time at the Falls, when Jaye finds Eric’s wife has returned to take him back home. Aaron tries to help by taking everything with a face out of Jaye’s trailer, but picture in a bacon ad on the television starts talking, so Jaye throws her TV out the window, only to hit Heidi, who happens to be walking past, on the head. Heidi fakes amnesia, but Jaye sees through it. Meanwhile, Mahandra is in complete denial about her sexual relationship with Aaron, which he naturally wants to continue.

Jaye starts spying on Heidi when the Brass Monkey says, “She’s going to kill him.” In the end, she finally gets the Brass Monkey to tell her why she has been singled out for these odd conversations with inanimate objects.

Mahandra needs to file paperwork at the local Satsuma Indian Reservation, so she can prove she is 1/8 Native American to secure grants to pay off her student loans. Jaye’s sister Sharon needs cheap cigarettes, so the three of them go to the Reservation, where Jaye is instructed by a totem pole to talk to a dead woman. Bill Hooten, the woman’s grandson is supposed to take over as spiritual leader, but all signs point to Jaye as the true seer. Naturally, Jaye doesn’t want the job, so she helps Bill. Meanwhile, Sharon has a nasty run in with an old law-school rival, who turns out to be the Tribal Lawyer, who is supposed to approve Mahandra’s application.

While Jaye is helping Wade the Security Guard with his crackdown on shoplifting, a crazed gunman takes over Wonderfalls Gift Emporium holding everyone hostage. Jaye, Alec, Wade and Sharon are held at gunpoint, while the Barrel Bear gives Jaye advice on what to do. Meanwhile Eric and Heidi are heading back to New Jersey, and Jaye may be missing her last opportunity to tell Eric how she really feels about him.
