Mahandra needs to file paperwork at the local Satsuma Indian Reservation, so she can prove she is 1/8 Native American to secure grants to pay off her student loans. Jaye’s sister Sharon needs cheap cigarettes, so the three of them go to the Reservation, where Jaye is instructed by a totem pole to talk to a dead woman. Bill Hooten, the woman’s grandson is supposed to take over as spiritual leader, but all signs point to Jaye as the true seer. Naturally, Jaye doesn’t want the job, so she helps Bill. Meanwhile, Sharon has a nasty run in with an old law-school rival, who turns out to be the Tribal Lawyer, who is supposed to approve Mahandra’s application.

Episode Quotes |

Alec: Shoot him again!
Bill Hooten: It won’t matter. The bullets bounced right off!
Security Guard: Yeah, they bounced. They’re rubber.
Alec: Rubber?
Security Guard: Yeah. And they’re not bullets, they’re pellets. Like rubber pellets. For crowd dispersal.
Bill Hooten: Oh. (sadly) I’m not invincible. | Bill Hooten: Thank you for supporting this imperialist establishment. Enjoy your purchase and have a racist day. | Jaye: We’re both pathetic.
Bill Hooten: But at least you’re pathetic with great purpose. I’m pathetic with no purpose. | Jaye: Having great purpose isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I’ve had great purpose, and I’ve had no purpose, and I have to say, no purpose is a lot easier. Expectations are low. Nobody asks you for anything. Count your blessings. |

Cultural References |
| |
Jaye: Neo was just a big geek until he swallowed that little red pill.
This is a reference to the 1999 film The Matrix, where the character Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) was unable to see the real world until he swallowed a red pill, after which he became a heroic messiah figure. |

Analysis |
| |
This episode features the first time any of the muses actually converse with Jaye, responding to her questions. Also the Totem Pole (and the dead grandmother) are the first to actually speak in complete paragraphs, rather than one-line blurbs. Like the monkey’s response in the previous episode, this hints that the muse’s relationship with Jaye is getting more complex, and they appear to be willing to give her more information to work from than the cryptic one liners that she had trouble decoding at the beginning of the series. |
