As the school year begins, Dwayne and Whitley recall their honeymoon in Los Angeles, during which the L.A. riots broke out. The students and staff of Hillman discuss the case against the officers who beat Rodney King and its aftermath. Freddie sports a new look for law school, prompting tension with Lena. Several new freshmen enroll at Hillman and interact with the gang.
Dwayne and Whitley continue to describe their honeymoon, when they were separated during the Los Angeles riots. Lena and Freddie continue to clash over their varied approaches to social change. Ron and Freddie share an unexpected moment.
Dwayne and Whitley argue about furniture for their new house. Freddie and Ron try to fight their attraction as he stays with her and Kim. Charmaine and Gina try to convince Lena to take part in Height Hall's stepping routine.
Terrell faces discipline when he is accused of insulting Charmaine in Dwayne's statistics class.
Kim has difficulty dissecting her first cadaver in anatomy class, and receives comfort from her partner. Ron tries to romance Kim after Freddie goes away with Shazza for the weekend. Whitley tries to convince Dwayne to invest in a painting after her company puts a hold on purchases. Ron and Freddie grow jealous during a dinner with Kim and Shazza.
After making sexist remarks at a party, Dwayne dreams that all of the candidates in the presidential election are women.
Dwayne works three jobs to help support the unemployed Whitley, but the schedule takes a toll on their love life. Whitley catches Ron and Freddie together.

Whitley's mother unexpectedly arrives for Thanksgiving, accompanied by her much younger fiancé. Whitley tries to hide the truth about the misfortunes suffered by Dwayne and her. Freddie tries to re-commit to Shazza, but is torn between a law school assignment and a rally for Haitian refugees.
Dwayne and Whitley's mothers cause havoc at their children's house on Thanksgiving. Shazza is among the protesters arrested at the rally for the Haitians, and confronts Freddie about Ron.
Dwayne is assigned rival gang members after Freddie organizes a mentorship program for teens detained at juvenile hall.

Dean Davenport assigns her students to write a dialogue theorizing on what might have been said during the only meeting between Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. Terrell reacts strongly after he and Charmaine are assaulted. Spencer repeatedly proposes to Kim.
Lena's friends from Baltimore come for a visit, leading to conflict between Dorian and Lena's ex-boyfriend, Piccolo.
Lena Horne comes to the Hillman campus to dedicate a scholarship named for her grandmother, but Whitley shuns Mr. Gaines when he attempts to help out with her planned event.
Lena, Gina, Charmaine, Dorian and Terrell rent a house from a temperamental retired baseball star, who considers enrolling at Hillman. Gina is contacted by her abusive ex-boyfriend.
