Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry are members of the Devil's Hole Gang, but it is the 1880s and they are finding that technology is making it very difficult to be a successful robber of banks and trains.
When Sheriff Lom Trevors finds that the Governor is happy to extend amnesty to Heyes and Curry, the boys jump at the chance. However, there is a catch - the amnesty must remain a secret for twelve months, and the boys must prove that they have earned it before it can be granted to them.
Thus - Mr. Joshua Smith and Mr. Thaddeus Jones are born.
The creator of 'Alias Smith And Jones' was the profilic screen writer, director and producer, Roy Huggins. However, Huggins was embarrassed at the number of times his name appeared on the credits, so he wrote a number of episodes under the name of John Thomas James, these three names being the names of his three sons.
Heyes: Better go check your fuse, Kyle.
Kyle: I ain't goin' in there!
Heyes: Listen, when the leader of the gang tells them to do something, don't they have to do it?
Curry: Yeah, it's my understanding.
Kyle: But what makes you such a great leader, Heyes, is that you never tell no man to do a thing you wouldn't do yourself!!
Heyes: You want to be leader?
Curry: After you!
Sheriff Lom Travers: The Governor can't come flat out and give you amnesty now. First you've got to prove you deserve it.
Heyes: So all we've got to do is stay out of trouble until the Governor figures we deserve amnesty?
Kid Curry: But in the meantime we'll still be wanted?
Sheriff Lom Travers: Well that's true. Until then only you, me and the Governor will know about it. It'll be our secret.
Heyes: I sure wish the Governor would let a few more people in on our secret!
