Anna and Kristina's Grocery Bag

First, a caveat or three: I will watch almost any show that has to do with food and cooking. Also, I experience insomnia from time to time. And, I have only seen the episodes from the season now airing on OWN, which in my area, start at 5:30 or 6:00 a.m.

Now, at first I thought this show was a put-on. Each episode features the eponymous Anna and Kristina cooking a meal using recipes from the day's featured cookbook, and testing ingredients, cooking tools, etc., that are used in the recipes being prepared. Because they have invited an expert gourmet, or at least a gourmand, to show up at a set time to sample their preparations and rate their performances, the looming deadline contributes an added level of pressure and stress. Having now seen each episode from the current season, I'm mostly upset with myself for watching.

I find Kristina, in particular, quite irritating. She mugs for the camera, all too frequently doesn't read the recipe correctly (so that she omits an ingredient or a step), and otherwise acts goofy, as though she were auditioning for the Lucy or Laverne role in a comedy remake. I can only imagine that Anna puts up with Kristina's seeming incompetence because she harbors a secret crush. I still don't know how much of Kristina's dizziness is exaggerated, how much is genuine, and how much is genuine affectation. In any case, it's extremely annoying.

Both women, however, exhibit a fundamental lack of knowledge of some basic cooking techniques (rendering bacon, for example) and ingredients that even a good home cook should possess. And THEN, they actually have the nerve to insert bits wherein one of them talks to the camera quite authoritatively about a particular ingredient or tool, like we should ignore all the foolishness that came before and take to heart something obviously written for them.

The aforementioned deadline rapidly approaching, Anna and Kristina fret and fuss, ever realizing that the FIVE HOURS or so they allotted for the TWO OF THEM to prepare the meal just isn't enough time, and/or that they left out an ingredient or missed a step in the recipe (usually Kristina's fault because she admittedly has a hard time reading a recipe) so that there's some doubt that at least one of the recipes will even be edible. And this is the way EVERY EPISODE plays out, so you can imagine that by the time you've seen this 3 or 4 times - well, as the old saying goes: "If you've seen one, you've seen 'em all."
