|The first and only season of Beware the Batman is plagued by sporadic preemptions by Cartoon Network. The toy sales apparently didn't prove sufficient to warrant the show's continuation, and CN preempted the show several times for weeks on end. Finally they moved it to a late-night timeslot on weekends, then released the last seven episodes in a final block before losing the rights to air the show.|
Onscreen, the show chronicled Batman's early days in Gotham, when he is still a wanted vigilante because of his crimefighting efforts beyond the law. Early on he fights crime on his own. However, when Alfred is unable to continue, the older man calls in Tatsu, who eventually proves she is worthy to serve at Batman's side and takes the role of Katana.
Batman fights several individual villains such as Anarky, Magpie, Humpty Dumpty, Phosphorous Rex, Tobias Whale, and Cypher. His most persistent foes are Professor Pyg and Mister Toad, mutated animal-like villains and eco-terrorists. At the same time, Lieutenant James Gordon attempts to arrest Batman and fails.
The League of Assassins, led by Ra's al Ghul, eventually steals the Ion Cortex from Wayne Industries and uses it to plunge Gotham into darkness. During this time, it is revealed that Alfred was inadvertently responsible for the death of Tatsu's father. Ra's attempts to use this to force Tatsu to his side, but fails. Gordon helps to defeat the League and for his efforts is promoted to Commissioner.
During the second half of the season, Batman continues to face menaces such as the Key Killer Croc, the Council, and Deathstroke. He also makes allies such as Metamorpho, Man Bat, and Barbara Gordon, using the secret identity of Oracle. And DA Harvey Dent uses Batman's illegal activities to bolster his own run for mayor of Gotham. Harvey joins forces with Anarky, who brings in the mercenary Deathstroke.
The season ends with the revelation that Deathstroke is Alfred's former protégé. Deathstroke now seeks to supplant Bruce in Alfred's eyes. Katana calls in Batman's allies and it is only together that they manage to defeat Deathstroke and Batman comes to accept that he can rely on others.
