Three young doctors (Shelley Hack, Jim Metzler, Alec Baldwin) trained at the Texas Medical Center are sent to the small town of Cutter, where they establish a community hospital. The addition of a helicopter and an oil well explosion won't dazzle the already over-exposed eyes of viewers. Then, when the series scales down to human problems, it washes them all with soap suds. One is a rigger, part-time rodeo rider who suffers an amputation, and — surprise, surprise — turns bitter toward the world. Linked with that is his wife's saga. Because of his embitterment toward the doctors who had to cut off his arm, he refuses to permit his pregnant spouse, afflicted with toxaemia, to seek professional medical advice. Instead, he consigns wife and unborn child to a midwife. The pregnant woman is Beth's crusade of the week, which gives rise to the show's most melodramatic line. Angry at the husband's attitude, she spits out, "You'd like to have had that girder float off your arm."
