At a dinner party, arrogant mystery author Edgar Manning is presented with the Blunt Instrument Award, awarded annually by the Crime Writers of America, for his book "The Shanghai Solution." Fellow nominee Ellery Queen is not present at the dinner due to a bad head cold so Manning calls him afterwards on the telephone to gloat. He is murdered while speaking to our hero.
This was the final episode of the series to air on Thursday night from 9:00 to 10:00. Henceforth, Ellery Queen would air on Sundays at the same timeslot.
Eva Gabor is best known to TV views for her role as Lisa Douglas on the CBS comedy Green Acres.
Richard Jaeckel's character appears to be at least partially based on Mickey Spillane, a famous detective novelist of that time period.
Ellery: Dad, I've had your home remedies before and I'd really rather have the cold.
Manning: Do I detect a note of envy?
McVey: A little. If they had counted sales I would have won that award quite easily.
Magda: Edgar, if there's anything worse than a sore loser it's a sore winner.
Manning: Magda, my love, God has been generous to you. Don't ruin it by trying to be clever.
Magda: Why do publishers put a price tag on a piece of art?
Manning: Since when have you been bothered by a price tag?
McVey: You're outta line, pal.
Manning: Must you talk the way you write?
Inspector Queen: What are you doing here, McVey?
McVey: I'm doing your job, Inspector. Somebody has to.
Tisdale: (to Inspector Queen) I can't understand why you're taking the word of a vindictive woman.
Ellery: Nick, I wasn't trying to steal your girl.
McVey: I knew that when you brought her here.
McVey: (to Ellery) Maybe you'd like to have your nose re-arranged.
Ellery: I'll be Edgar Manning. Velie, would you be the killer?
Velie: If you say so, Maestro.
