Most episodes I see are almost always rated 8 or higher. I'm just curious how do most of you decide rating. Do you just rate 10 because it's your favourite show or do you compare that episode with the other episodes in the series and give it a rating based on that? I myself do the later but judging by the numbers I assume a majority of people just vote 10 because it's one of their favourites.

Note I am talking about individual episode ratings not the show rating.

I vote based on how much I have been entertained by the episode.

I vote on how well I like that episode. I don't compare it to other episodes of the same show. I usually give a score of between 7 and 10. The lowest score I have given that I remember is a 5.

I think about voting, but I just usually don't think about episodes that way. Maybe if I think about voting for a while, I'll start judging them that way. I 'd like to vote, in order to contribute more.

People will only vote for shows they watch, and will only watch shows they enjoy; so episodes will obviously be voted highly. This has always struck me as the inherent flaw in online voting for TV shows since TV.com introduced it.

When I vote on episodes of the shows I like, I normally vote on how entertaining it is and if the writing is up to snuff of the episodes preceding them.

I'm pretty sure that TV.com didn't invent the concept of users rating shows: IMDB had online TV show viewing for a while...

As noted, like most people I typically don't watch shows unless I like them, which means I tend to average in at about a 7. I wouldn't regularly watch a show that averaged out at 5. However, there's some real dogs even among the shows I do like, so it's not like they can't earn a 2-5. Spock's Brain ain't going to get much of a rating no matter how high you think of Star Trek as a whole.

And of course, if I'm just flipping through the dial while working on something, and watch something for a half hour, I'll rate it for what it is.
