chief nytimes theater critic a.o. scott is conducting a q&a live online at 7 tonight (jan 24, 2012). i think folks have to register a few hours before, but anybody can air their views on the oscar noms. it's at new york times knowledge network website, "beyond the red carpet."

Should silent films quality? Definitely, yes. There is more to acting than the words that are spoken, the non-verbals are just as important, if not more, to a performance, and so yes, I think they should qualify. It's kind of sad that with the addition of sound in films, that silent performances died out for the most part, when really it's just as good.
