All My Children long time cast member James Mitchell died at age 89 on January 22 of Chronic Obstructive Pumonary Disease and complications of Pneumonia. Mitchell joined the show in 1979 and quietly retired in September 2008 though his name continues to air as a cast member in the weekly end credits. Mitchell's did make a return appearance for the show's 40th anniversary on January 5th.

Robert B. Parker died, at his desk writing another book, on January 18. If the name sounds familiar, but you can't place him - he is most recognizable here for writing Spenser: For Hire.

Zelda Rubinstein, the tiny medium from the Poltergeist movies who asked Carol Anne over and over again to "Go into the Light", died at the age of 72.

Howard Zinn also passed away due to a heart attack.

Days of our Lives cast member Frances Reid has died at age 95 on February 3rd, 2010. Reid appeared on the very first episode of DAYS in 1965 and last appearance was in December 2007. Reid remained a regular cast member until her death but her health kept her from making appearances on the show. Prior to appearing on DAYS, Reid appeared on As the World Turns, The Edge of Night and Faces of Portia.

Justin Mentell who played "Garrett Wells" in Boston Legal died in a car accident on February 1st, 2010 at the age of 27.

He also had a semi-major role as "Terrell" in this past summer's "G-Force", and roles in smaller films, "'77", "Palo Alto, CA", "Roll Bounce", "At the Still Point" & "Gotham, IL"

That's one of the books I used in my AP US History class. I'm not sure how I remembered that.
