I just read that online about Estelle Getty. I thought she was awesome as Sophia on Golden Girls. While it's saddening, at least she's not suffering from dementia anymore.

Very sad. I didn't realize how hard the dementia had hit her. RIP.

I didn't know she had been ill at all. I wondered why she didn't show up on the TVLand Awards when they gave Golden Girls a special award. She played a character 20 years older than she really was, and was younger than at least one of the four 'girls' yet was first to pass away.

I also believe that she was a few months younger than Bea Arthur (who played her daughter Dorothy).

Betty White is actually the oldest born Jan 1922 with Bea a few months younger than Betty, Estelle is a year younger than Bea and Rue is 11 years younger than Estelle, its weird though that Betty is the eldest out of all them

None of the remaining Golden Girls showed up for Estelle's funeral...which was on her birthday

That's pretty tacky. You'd think after spending 7 or so years on set together they'd honor her, not blow it off...

I forgot where, but I read an article explaining the absenses. One of them just had surgery (hip, I think) and couldn't travel, Betty White couldn't make it, but sent flowers, and the other..uh, I forgot.

Rue was doing a play in NY, and Bea said she couldn't face seeing her dead. Betty did send flowers and listed her name and Rose on the card.
