The purpose of this thread is to give notice to all members of the site of various formatting guidelines which have not already been written up elsewhere. If you have a question about a format rule or don’t see the subject you’re interested in listed here, please post something in the Format Q&A thread.

Birth Name info should only be entered if it has been verified with another source that the birth name was actually the one one his/her birth certificate. Otherwise, leave the birth name fields blank.

Birthplace should never include the Country of Birth, since there is a separate field for that. Note: the 4 member countries of the United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) will be treated as "states" and should be included in the birthplace field. US States, Mexican States, Canadian Provinces and Australian States will also be included in the birthplace field. Do not abbreviate state (etc.) names. e.g. TX should be Texas.
