When Peter's colleague Professor Owens goes gambling, Peter assume that the man has developed a habit. However, when he finds Owens he discovers that a gangster is holding the professor's daughter hostage and forcing him to create a mathematical system to win at roulette, and agrees to help get her back.
In Italy, Professor Owens and his daughter Suzy are preparing to leave on the cable car on the last day of the season when most of the guests have already left. Owens settles his bill with the clerk, Lucia, and turns to go.
