Hazel Burke, played by Shirley Booth

Hazel is a live-in maid employed by George and Dorothy Baxter. Hazel is very outspoken and her willingness to speak her mind on any occasion often gets her into trouble. She enjoys sports of all kinds and is an outstanding bowler. In the first season she steps out with Barney, the postman, and Mitch, a taxi driver. Her best friend is Rosie Hammacher, another live-in maid in the neighborhood. Hazel is a determined woman; once she sets her mind to accomplishing a goal she pursues it with vigor. In one episode, she spearheads a drive to build a neighborhood playground in the face of city hall objections and in another episode, she finds a way to purchase an air conditioner in spite of George's opposition.
