A police investigator gets embroiled in an assassination plot when he turns up unconscious in the crime venue. James Wainwright stars as Frank Dain, the Police Lieutenant who won't be stopped in his effort to prove his story. Also starring in the film are Vera Miles, Richard Kiley, Andrew Duggan, Edmond O'Brien, Marsha Hunt and Gene Andrusco.
"Jigsaw" opens with Dain trailing a suspicious character to a fashionable apartment. Upon entering, the suspect whirls with gun in hand, but Dain shoots him first. Before he can search the body, Dain is knocked unconscious by beautiful, blonde Lilah Beth (Miss Miles). When Dain awakes, he finds himself confronted by District Attorney Dan Bellington (Richard Kiley). None of Dain's story checks out—there is no body on the floor and there is no blonde witness—but there is a different dead man who apparently jumped or was pushed off the apartment balcony. There is enough evidence to hold pain for murder, but, for the good of the force, Bellington decides to transfer the detective to another job. Particularly worried about the police image is Harrison Delando (Andrew Duggan), Chairman of the Police Commission. Dain, still bent on finding the blonde witness, agrees to a transfer to the missing persons bureau. From there, Frank begins an intense search for Lilah Beth. However, as time grows short all initial leads prove fruitless, and official records list the missing woman as having died sometime before.
