The story owes much to Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. Like Javert pursuing Valjean, Foster relentlessly pursues his victim and insists that "once a thief, always a thief." Unlike Javert, Foster learns to accept that men can change and choose not to kill himself, thanks to some advice from Dan.
