After being adopted then orphaned, Riley Veatch spent her childhood in the foster care system. Now, at the age of 16, Riley is determined to find her birth mother so she leaves Akron, Ohio for California to begin her search. There, she enrolls in Gossett High School, in which her possible aunt, Opal Brown, is an assistant principal. Though her sister denies being Riley's mother, Opal takes in Riley. With Riley's street smarts and Opal's practical knowledge, the two work together and forge an unlikely relationship.
