For many years, PBS' Masterpiece has brought excellent English drama to American televisions. Masterpiece Theatre's American Collection has applied those same high standards to works by America's literary masters. Each film in this series is aggressive in content yet quite different in theme, setting, and artistic representation. Additionally, each offering is typically American in dramatic intent and also epitomizes America's Independence and unique cultural heritage.
This Westport Country Playhouse production of Thornton Wilder's classic "Our Town" is highlighted by Paul Newman's first appearance on Broadway in 38 years. Set at the turn of the 20th century, the play takes an in-depth look at the ordinary lives of the people living and working in the small town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. As the see-all Stage Manager, Newman introduces us to two everyday, small-town families; whose loves, heartbreaks and misfortunes seemingly attain levels of enormous magnitude.
