“Almost A Woman” is based on Esmeralda Santiago’s courageous memoir that follows the plight of a young thirteen-year-old girl and her family as they move to New York from Puerto Rico. Immediately, the challenges begin to mount as she struggles with a new language and culture. The transition is not an easy one, and Esmeralda finds herself juggling her roles as daughter, student, and family translator. A fighter by nature, Esmeralda excels at everything that she does, and soon must also learn to cope with opportunities she had never imagined were even possible. Despite all of the hardships and struggles, the challenges faced in her new life help to mold her future as a great actress and writer.
