Bret: A Marshal's wages are pretty poor pay for gettin' killed.
Marshal: I knew what I was gettin' into before I took the job.
Red: (to Bret) Feelin' hostile?
Bret: Me, scared of Wade and 50 well-armed trail hands? Perish the thought.
Red: I see you're wearin' your gun.
Bret: Just in case I run into a snake.
Bret: (to Buckner) A man who shouts brave and loud then runs when he gets answered makes me sick.
Bret: I'm a fence straddler, Wade. I don't side with anybody. I just like to be left alone.
Bret: A man's a fool to call a hand when he knows he's beat. That's one of the rules of my business.
Bret: Lil, you're making that fence I've been straddling pretty uncomfortable.
This one is pretty much a straight dramatic episodes that eschews comedy elements which were becoming prevalent in the series. In most ways, it's a reversal to the early episodes of the series. The character of Bret Maverick in this episode might be a bit too self-righteous for the tastes of some viewers.
