Maverick: Duel at Sundown

In the town of Sundown, Bret is called out by Red Hardigan, a shiftless cowboy who's fast with a gun. But Red might have to stand in line. It seems as though the notorious outlaw John Wesley Hardin also has a score to settle with our hero. Or does he?

Episode Quotes
Pappyism: As long as you live, stick to poker.

Bret: I'm Bret Maverick. I didn't know Jed had a grown daughter.
Carrie: We Christiansen's are full of surprises. Hop in.
Bret: Isn't there a safer way to get to the Molly O?
Carrie: You could walk. It's only nine miles.

Jed: What's the big hurry, Bret? Leadville will still be there.
Bret: How can I be sure? Leadville's just startin' to boom. That's the time when the games are big and loose.

Bret: (about poker) Luck's important only when you play with men who play as tight as you do. When I find that out, I quit. It's gambling.

Carrie: Red, you're jealous.
Red: (about Bret) Now if I was jealous I'd be out there bustin' him to pieces.

Carrie: (to Bret) I find you completely resistable.

Bret: What's your dad got against this Hardigan?
Carrie: Only one thing--he doesn't have any money.
Bret: At least he and I are starting off even.

Bret: (to Jed) I promised my pappy that on my 38th birthday I'd look around for a wife, get married, and raise twelve Mavericks. That's a long way off.

Jed: Take a big handful. Doubt if you'll find cigars like that in Leadville.
Bret: I'll have a supply shipped in from Cuba.

Bret: (to Jed) I've never owed anybody any money in my life and I don't intend to begin now.

Red: I'm Red Hardigan. Mind if I pull up a chair?
Bret: All it takes is $500.

Jed: (about his wheelchair) On second thought, why walk when you can ride?

Red: Your stage is waiting for you, Maver-ack.
Bret: You sellin' tickets?
Red: No, but you're buyin' one.

Carrie: You put money ahead of everything, don't you?
Bret: No, there's breathing.

Red: (to the doctor) This right hand's gonna bring you some business.

Jed: (to Carrie about Red) Honey, believe me, he wants the Molly O a lot worse than he wants you.

Bret: (to the doctor about "Hardin") Mean lookin' cuss, ain't he?

Bret: Where's that other big gunslinger, Red Hardigan? I might as well take care of him while I'm in the mood.

Two Hollywood legends, James Garner and Clint Eastwood, square off in this episode which also serves to illustrate something about the character of Bret Maverick. Sometimes, in order to emerge with his hide in one piece, he would have to call on brother Bart to save his bacon.
