In each of us, there burns a soul of a warrior. In every generation, a few are chosen to prove it. Centuries ago, in a time of darkness and fury, that fate befell three strangers. A monk, Kung Lao, an exiled guard, Siro, and a thief, Taja, who have to defend our Earth Realm from the forces of Outworld. By fighting for their lives, by fighting for their honour and by fighting for their realm in a tournament called Mortal Kombat.
Kung Lao (Paolo Montalban), a noble warrior monk from the Temple of the Order of Light, is given the responsibility of protecting the Earth Realm by Lord Rayden (Jeffrey Meek), the God of Thunder. Along the way, he enlists the help of two fighters - Taja (Kristanna Loken), a beautiful and street-smart thief, and Siro (Daniel Bernhardt), a muscular and strong-willed guard.
Together they must recruit and train warriors for the next Mortal Kombat tournament in a city filled with darkness and treachery. At the same time, the trio must battle the evil forces of Outworld including the demon sorcerer, Shang Tsung (Bruce Locke), who was cast out to the cobalt mines by Shao Kahn after Kung Lao defeated him in Mortal Kombat. There, Shang Tsung forms an alliance with the sultry and seductive Vorpax (Tracy Douglas) who has her own hidden agenda.
