Presidential candidates debate gay issues on Logo
The top Democratic presidential contenders will take part in an Aug. 9 debate on gay issues, in what is being billed as a first-of-its-kind event, with Viacom's Logo cable net to air it.

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards and Christopher Dodd have agreed to participate in the forum, with questions to be posed by a panel that includes singer Melissa Etheridge and Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation and Logo are sponsoring the debate, to be held in Studio City.

Event is a coup for Logo, the cable channel aimed at the gay, lesbian and transgender community that was launched in 2005. Debate will be the network's first live event.

The fact that all of the top-tier candidates agreed to the debate is perhaps a testament to the importance of the gay vote, which organizers say makes up about 4% of the voting population. Logo has about 27 million subscribers and a much smaller audience than Fox News. Many Democratic candidates have shunned Fox News' plans to co-sponsor debates, citing what they call the network's conservative bias in its programming.

HRC spokesman Brad Luna said there will be no forum of Republican presidential candidates, even though the Human Rights Campaign did extend invites. Among HRC's criteria for holding the debate was that it would have to secure at least two top-tier contenders to participate. Mitt Romney's campaign said no, and HRC never got a response from the campaigns of John McCain and Rudy Giuliani, Luna said.

It's unclear who else in the Democratic field will show for the Aug. 9 event. A spokeswoman for Chris Dodd's campaign said that he will attend. The campaign of Joseph Biden has declined, citing prior scheduling commitments, and HRC has yet to hear from Bill Richardson and Dennis Kucinich, Luna said. Another contender, Mike Gravel, was not invited because he did not meet organizers' viability threshold of being a candidate who raised at least $100,000 in the first quarter, Luna said.

Court TV to become truTV on January 1
Court TV today unveiled its long-awaited new name - truTV. Come Jan. 1, 2008, the network will drop its old moniker and logo in favor of truTV and expand its programming slate to include the action-based programming executives say the new name reflects.

Network executives announced plans for the rebrand at Court's upfront in March and, as per plans to unveil the changes this summer, told key advertisers and cable operators of the new branding last night.

The plan, said executives at the time and now, is to target a psychographic called "Real Engagers," by revamping daytime trial coverage, adding nighttime entertainment shows and taking on a new name and look.

TV Guide up for sale
NEW YORK -- Publishing and television outfit Gemstar TV Guide is on the block.

The company said Monday that it is looking into a number of options, including a sale, after a period when it began to reverse its fortunes under topper Rich Battista.

Company chair Anthea Disney said in a statement that Gemstar-TV Guide is "now poised to investigate the range of available strategic alternatives for continuing to build shareholder value."

News Corp., which controls Gemstar, said it supports a sale; the conglom said the company could fit better under a different owner. UBS Investment Bank is advising the firm on the potential sale.

But who might buy the company -- which is an odd amalgam of user guides and content -- is a difficult question, especially as more freewheeling buyers like private-equity firms seek to be more careful about their investments.

Gemstar-TV Guide endured setbacks after an accounting scandal; it also has faced erosion on the print side of its biz as competition has grown.

But it increased net income by more than 30% last year and revenue by about 9% in the first quarter of 2007.

And the company earlier this year purchased rival firm Aptiv Digital in a bid to solidify its hold on the interactive program-guide market.

On the airwaves, TV Guide is moving into original programming with shows including "America's Next Producer." Net also made news when it announced that actress Lisa Rinna will take over red-carpet duties from Joan Rivers.

FOX Names Reilly President
The network has changed, but the title's the same.

Less than two months after he was pushed out of NBC, Kevin Reilly is back in the entertainment president's chair -- but this time at Fox.

To make room for Reilly, current entertainment topper Peter Liguori has been bumped up to Fox Entertainment chairman; both moves were expected (Daily Variety, July 6). New arrangement will mimic the Liguori-Reilly one-two punch the duo offered at FX until Reilly left for NBC in 2003.

Also moving in the shuffle: longtime Fox exec VP Craig Erwich, who is ankling the net but could still wind up elsewhere in the Fox family.
