SBS is a government funded channel and was launched on October 24, 1980. By June 1985 the channel was available all over Australia. The network was originally known as Channel 0/28 and then Network 0-28.
The network shows many foreign films with English subtitles and also shows international sports such as football and cycling. It also shows the news in many different languages during the morning. The network shows many imported shows from all over the world including telenovas from Brazil and Mexico.
The first in-show advertisement breaks began on October 9, 2006.
