TV Prima began broadcasting in 1993 under license of RRTV from November 27, 1992 as a Czech private television.
At the beginning, the channel was broadcasting only in Prague and Central Bohemia under name FTV Premiéra, later Premiéra TV. In 1994 it got a license for broadcasting in whole Czech Republic but with a condition that part of the broadcasting is assigned for regional broadcasting. Nonetheless, every year with less and less assigned time.
Name of the channel is Prima televize (which in Czech means both "prime television" and "nice television") since 1997.
In 2003, the channel's license was extended to June 28, 2018.
In 2005, 50% stake of the channel was purchased by Swedish MTG.
Former general manager of the channel, Petr Dvořák, was swapped by Aleksandras Cesnavicius in September 2006.
