Independent Television (ITV) was launched on November 22, 1955. Originally the network was franchised across the country. The ITV1 name came into effect on August 11, 2000. On October 28, 2002 the network dropped all of it's regional branding.
ITV has produced some of the countries top programmes throughout it's existence including the world's longest running prime time soap opera Coronation Street. During the 1970's the network produced some of the countries top comedy series including The Benny Hill Show, Bless This House and Man About The House.
In recent years the network has had big hits with Heartbeat, Pop Idol, The X Factor, Ant And Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and Bad Girls.
As of September, 2006 the channel was attracting an average 20% audience share. |
