Animal Planet was launched on September 1, 1996 and is available to view on cable and satellite across the United States. The network is owned by Discovery Communications with BBC Worldwide having a 20% stake.
The channel shows a variety of different programs dedicated to the animal world. The shows range from a humorous look at animals, to such serious issues as animal cruelty and health related problems. Some of the most popular series included those of the late Steve Irwin, such as The Crocodile Hunter Diaries, The Jeff Corwin Experience, The Planet's Funniest Animals, Meerkat Manor and the Animal Cops programs. Animal Planet is available in a number of countries world wide.
