[WARNING: If you have not yet seen this week's episode of 'Grey's Anatomy,' stop reading right now. Major plot spoilers ahead!]
It's been seven years since Dr. Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) left a heartbroken Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) at the altar. But after last night's squeal-worthy episode, these two powerhouse docs were finally given the chance to reunite. Oh, and for the record, it was amazing!
Seriously, guys. I didn't know just how much I missed having Burke on this show until seeing him back on the series. His chemistry with Cristina was just as palpable as ever, making me believe now, more than ever, that it was the right decision to bring his character back, especially in this way.

To be clear, I'm not saying this in any way excuses certain wrongs from the actor's past. However, you have to admit that his character's return was a genius plot device, not to mention the perfect way to help wrap up Cristina's story before Oh's upcoming departure. Plus, anyone who doesn't think Burke added an extra level of brilliance to the show is just plain lying. Nothing beats those colorful scrub caps of his.
But the reunion of these two former flames took on a rather interesting twist. Unlike the promos suggested, Burke's "wanting" of Cristina had nothing to do with romance and everything to do with her taking over the hospital in Zurich, which he currently runs. That's right — he offered Dr. Yang her very own hospital! Are these the kind of gifts exes usually give each other after years of being apart? Because if so, I have a few calls to make.
Granted, it was a little extremely disappointing to discover that Burke is now happily married to another woman ("the love of his life") and has two kids, promptly throwing any hope we had of an on-call room hookup session right out the window. However, Burke did admit that, if he wasn't leaving the hospital, he'd never be able to offer her the job. He couldn't work with her again, remembering how the way he loved her was "consuming." In the end, it would ruin his marriage and he didn't want that.
Now, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't screaming at my TV for them to just throw caution to the wind and kiss already. (Sorry, next door neighbors!) But that scene was simply mesmerizing, and the more I think about it, the more I'm satisfied with Shonda Rhimes' decision to leave things at that.

I mean, walking out on the bride during your own wedding is a hard thing to bounce back from. Yet it gave both of them the opportunity to become the accomplished, hardcore surgeons they always wanted to be, and they both recognized that in the end.
Is there still a connection there? Certainly. Would I totally watch a spin-off show about these two? Absolutely! But since that doesn't seem to be in the cards, this interaction allowed both of them (and us) to find a little more closure to that particular chapter of their lives.
Some of you may agree with this, though I'm sure others will be furious with the lack of lip-locking. (And if you want to start a Kickstarter program for that spin-off I mentioned, I fully support you and will happily donate.) However, if Cristina really does have to leave our television screens, there was no better person to help give her the means to make that happen.
After all, Meredith may be her person, but Burke will always be her Preston. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go rewatch all of the Burke scenes.
